Yusuke I’m actually really freaking livid about that too. Just found out today and I called off my pre-order. I don’t want to own freaking digital only rentals when I buy a physical game.
A friend of mine who has no internet hooked up to his PS4 is especially screwed since he won’t play the second and third games period.
I’ll wait for them to port Spyro to PC and Switch and likely re-release on all platforms a version with all its content on the disc like they did with Crash when it got ported over to Xbox One, PC, and Switch with all DLC already included.
If you guys also want this kind of cheap business practice to stop, I’d do the same and not buy the game either and let them know why on their Social Media. Both Activision and the developer Toys for Bob. I gave them an earful about it.
Activision is nothing without its consumers. They have no choice but to listen if enough of us refuse to give them our money and demand better. Just like when EA finally caved in with their lootbox BS with Star Wars Battlefront.
CosmicNoirTear, I wasn't planning on buying it for a while anyway since I didn't really have much interest in replaying old games I've played already when I still have a bunch of other games I'm still chipping away at, but it's scummy regardless. Spidermans coming out not long before it anyway and I was considering getting that PS4 Pro bundle they're releasing for the game (Not sure about the colours yet though, I might just go with a normal looking one and get the game from amazon or something.), So I doubt I would have bought it on release no matter the circumstances.
Anyway, only two reasons I can think of are the last two games aren't finished and can't be shipped on disk which is worrying so close to release, or they are so large they can't fit more than one game on a single dual layer blu-ray. I would "hope" it's the former (For what that's worth) since common sense would dictate just to put 3 disks in the case and call it a day, though I wouldn't put it past Activision to be so bloody cheap they they simply didn't want to pay a couple of extra dollars per physical copy to add in 2 extra disks.
These are the people that published the initial train wrecks named Destiny 1 and 2, locked every bit of DLC for Black Ops 4 behind the Special Edition of the game itself since the season pass can't be bought from a store front currently, and also cut the entire campaign from the game and replaced it with a Battle Royale mode. Nevermind the crap that happened with Modern Warfare Remastered.
Even after all these years, I'm still amazed at how greedy and shady the big Publishers still act. I really hope they hurt this quarter just to see the knee jerk reaction, but I very much doubt it. Still, only EA has managed to top them these last few years in regards to missteps and hate from the community so at least people are noticing this stuff if nothing else.
Like you say though, I'll personally wait for a while and see what happens in regards to a PC and/or switch port if they decide to go ahead with that. Either way it'll be much cheaper and/or second hand when I get around to buying it so it's a win-win for me. Hopefully they'll wise up and put all 3 on a disk at some point though, I would rather not spend a couple of days constantly downloading stuff.
Surprisingly fast turn around from Activision. That's a first.
Still, I don't trust a word that comes out of the mouth of an extremely anti-consumer company that's proven time and again they only care about their bottom line to the point where they'd regularly sell dogsh*t if it'll make them a fast buck. Especially since the guy who responded seems to be retracting everything. I'm not holding my breath on it just yet, as much as I want for it to be true.
I'll be much more at ease to hear it from Toys for Bob that all 3 games are on the disc and all it takes is a normal install to play the game like any other single player game.
Worst case scenario, this is just damage control, but at least their aware that this isn't going to fly with consumers and will possibly be looking for a better solution.
CosmicNoirTear yeah fans don't like multiple disks anymore (unless they come as one package but even then it's not popular). Activision probably thought they were being slick in order to make more money but at least customers are getting smarter and more aware of that. Now I really hope a certain company tries to make a certain Final Fantasy VII remake on one disk as well.
CosmicNoirTear, If they delayed it they could end up running into the next quarter and they would rather release a half baked product early and get the sales figures than delay just to make the 3rd quarterly report look good.
They haven't published many games this year bar Crash Bandicoot, and Black Ops 4 comes out the following month so they probably don't want it to cannibalize the potential sales of Spyro, hence the rushed September release.
Any the "update" they are referring to is likely PR double speak, we know it's a mandatory one if you want to play those games so I genuinely can't see it being a small one. Best case scenario it's a bunch of smaller assets that haven't been finished yet to make it for print, though that could run hundreds of megabytes to maybe a couple of gigabytes. Worst case it's large sections of the games which would be a fairly large portion of data.
Either way, the wording says update but for them that could mean anything from a small line of code being altered right up to 99% of the game being downloaded. Again these were the people who said an "update" would be required to play the story in Call of Duty, and it turned out to basically be a full download if the information I'm reading is correct, I don't know personally since I never played it.
Essentially, a good portion of people are likely fucked if they wanted to get that game, especially if they have limited or no internet. I know my friend won't have internet for another couple of weeks and he wanted to buy it, but he's just cancelled it now and he's buying Spiderman instead.
I guess if you only want to play Spyro 1 and you have limited or no internet around that time then you're fine though, but I would imagine those people are very few in number.
The mandatory download of 2/3 of the game's content being the obvious issue. This particular statement is especially promising about the delay:
"Everyone here at Toys for Bob is so proud to be reigniting the original Spyro trilogy after all these years," Toys for Bob co-studio head Paul Yan said in a blog post. "We're deeply committed to getting these games right, so we’ve decided to move the release date of Spyro Reignited Trilogy to November 13, 2018.
I'll take waiting longer for complete, memorable games just like the originals were over a rushed, mandatory download, mess likely still in it's Beta Phase. Anyone else here remember that dumpster fire that was Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly? Cuz I sure as hell don't want a repeat of that shit again.
And with this wonderful news, I can gladly return to supporting this game. Got a lot of screen shots I've been withholding for a while now.
Gonna pre-order once more by tomorrow to hopefully encourage their decision on this, since Activision does keep track of pre-orders of this game.
We have so much more power over these developers and how they put out their games than we think.

Dream: Hmmmm... looks like the version of Vampire Bund I'm seeing on Funi's YouTube channel's an edited version. A couple minutes of episode 2 were clearly removed with Mina in nothing but underwear battling human assassins. Then again, recall there was a good...

Dream: Not sure if I should be donning the nostalgia goggles or not giving a damn. Looks like the original Digimon Adventure series is getting a reboot airing starting in the Spring season.

Taka: I'll watch it if there's nothing catching my eye in Spring. winter 2020 was a weak anime season for me.

Dream: Wouldn't say it's all bad for me. Have a few titles holding my interest. Just it typically doesn't have as many major titles of note that would hold me over.

Dream: Done with Vampire Bund. Will be working on a review of it before I hop into the next Funi series. Hoping to get it up either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how lengthy my thoughts get.
