Studio:Gainax, Toei Animation Adaptation: Manga Genres: Action, Sci-Fi, Comedy, Ecchi, Shoujo Ai Episodes: 3 Release Date: July 3, 2004
Since I review Devilman: Crybaby, and mention Cutie Honey, why not review the latest incarnation of the show before the new one come out this year so here the review.
Cutie Honey is a series involving a sexy android who can change clothes that give her different ability. When her father is killed by the group Panther Claw, she vows for revenge and fights for Justice. The anime is influential and is considered to be a classic. The latest adaptation was made by Gainax and you can definitely see where shows like Panty and Stocking and Kill la Kill got their influence. Let see if this reboot to a classic franchise (that honestly isn't that great if I am being honest, with Shinji holding up the best due to the art) is any good.
Story: The show only has three 45 minute episode and as I said is about Cutie Honey fighting the evil criminal organization, Panther claw, to get revenge for her Father dead. Overall it is really fun and does mostly involve just her fighting Black Panther claw while dealing with the police. Aki, the police lead investigator, and Honey start a friendship as they fight Black Panther Claw and is just blasted to watch due to how insane it can be. With lots of absurd fanservice humor, and just plain old Gainax having fun with their animation. The last episode having lots of twist and turn, and lots of cool villains. Honey seems to be vulnerable compared to the previous installment and I do like it as it makes Aki relationship with her more important and forces her to confront her own weakness like revenge and friendship. It is sort of the cliche you expect, but they are done good enough that you don't mind. Granted it is just three episode, and while the story is pace well enough, there definitely more scene that could have been explore more to give the show more depth, especially when it comes to some character backstories that could have been explored more, specifically Aki and the final Boss Jill.
If you are looking for something sexy, fun and absurd with some meat in the plot, than this should be entertaining.
Sound:Is overall fun and reflect the anime with the original op song coming back as catchy as ever.
Character: As I stated before Honey while still being her sexy fun self that fights justice, is a bit more vulnerable and have self-doubt. Her character development are done well making the moment where she triumph that much more rewarding. The side character is just as fun with the journalist being a fun shady sidekick and the female detective, Aki and later friend, being a one-man army. Think every 80's action star fit into one woman, and that what you get, a total badass that happen to be stuck up at times, but also a good friend to Honey. Also, love their relationship and how she does her best to help her, even if it means shooting lots and lots of gun. She is a badass with guns and is just so much fun seeing her in contrast with the police who are basically represented as children, making her testosterone self that much hilarious and awesome. The characters are fun, and the main villain is decent with some great designs.
Animation: The animation is from Gainax with some great talent behind it, making it very colorful, chaotic, vibrant and just fun. With the last episode having the best animation and designs, as most of the monsters are really fun to look at and how they function with stuff like breast rocket and penis cannon XD. With each episode having different animators, from people behind kill la kill, panty and stocking, Gurren Lagann, to overlord and even the person from Evangelion. Seeing their work reflect the anime.Cutie Honey new custome redisign is still sexy and great looking with a decent amount of scene of her being naked as always. Also, love how they do the shading when Honey gets mad. They have a lot of great comedic and fun design but is not perfect. Some of the action scenes in the first episode has way too much camera shaking. While not outright terrible, it did irritated me. Is Gainax having fun with their animation and at their best.
Overall is a fun sexy reboot to a classic franchise. Maybe is a bit too different in some area than the original, but that what you want with a reboot, something different, but similar enough. If you want to see a fun fanservice show of good versus evil with fun animation, then go and enjoy the adventure of Cutie Honey. B-
Now is time for IS IT YURI. A segment where I decide how gay a show is.
The show is tag Shoujo Ai which means yuri, but usually no sex. So how gay is it? Well, Aki in the original series was a lesbian, and honestly, she does blush inconsistently in the show with Honey and honestly it would surprise nobody if she was gay considering how much testosterone she has and being somewhat a tomboy. Also, saving a friend is not gay, because who the hell cares if it looks gay, as long as a life is saved, there is a lot of blushing, tongue and prince charming comparison. There are lots of scenes that are clearly there for yuri fanservice, which is not surprising considering it is a fanservice show. While the show does deal with friendship a lot, it could be argued that is a start to a relationship that might end up with them being a cute couple. Not to mention Aki said she no longer make "friends" yet she does have friends, so that "friend" might mean more than that. At worst is yuri bait, at best is open to interpretation and that they might go down that road in the future if they are not already.
So, in conclusion, is just gay enough to be considered Shoujo-ai as their relationship in the show is important. And while yes not all friends who blush are gay, they do have scenes that are clearly meant to be taken that way since it is a fanservice show with the series having history of girls falling in love with Honey.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
