Fireworks Review by Jgames Fireworks is a 2017 movie by studio Shaft that just recently been released for a limited time in theater and the same guy who produced YOUR NAME is directing this. Also, it has fireworks like SILENT VOICE. Did I mention the guy who produced YOUR NAME also directing this? It obviously means this is a good movie, especially since it is animated by shaft RIGHT? I mean it has teenage angst, people feeling like they have to poop because they are horny, bad CG, uninteresting characters, messy plot, pretentious ending that is supposed to be happy but just plain confusing and uninteresting, time travel (LIKE THAT ONE MOVIE YOU LIKE), and horny teenager with lots of angst. This movie was enjoyable terrible. I had a great time watching this cheesy slob of a romance movie. Also shout out to Cinemark, where they play the movie earlier than when it is stated in the tickets because they are too lazy to fix their god damn clocks to the actual time instead a few minutes ahead, making me miss the opening credits. Let get into the review.
The movie is a romantic movie with time travel, where the main character, Norimichi has a crush on a girl who his friend also has a crush. At a firework festival, the love interest decides to ask his friend out, which leads to several things, when suddenly the magical ball the love interest randomly found turn out to be magic and has time travel power, with Norimichi constantly time traveling. First of all the plot is a goddamn mess. With the story going nowhere for the first thirty minute. It does not get us interested in the characters, or tell us a lot about them except they are horny teenagers talking about boobs and if fireworks are round or flat, the love interest is moving and then Norimichi throw the magical ball because he was mad and activate time travel. Except he does not realize about time travel which I thought they might do something interesting with it, but it just becomes confusing time travel with the character Norimichi not reacting how most people would to time travel and sort of just accept it. There are moments where out of nowhere the movie becomes a music video which almost made me burst out of laughing just due to how random it is. Then they try to have another music video type sequence, that tries to feel whimsical and magical and said a lot of things, but the movie has not earned that moment that it just becomes laughable. Also throughout the movie, the friend are fighting over if fireworks are round or flat, which you think might have a deeper meaning or a huge paid off, but aside for visual aesthetic and more confusion to the time travel, it felt like a pointless stupid conversation. Plus there a subplot with the teacher dating, that is just a few minutes, but completely pointless in a 90-minute movie that just felt like extra padding. Or the fact that they are talking about boobs quite a few time in the movie, which add nothing except reestablished they are horny teenagers. Which I think him focusing on the love interest crotch in her swimsuit (which is highly detail XD) was enough to sell that. The time travel aspect of the movie is not cleverly done where each time travel is reverse, lots of new information is revealed and lots of different scenarios happen that make you more interested in the characters. Instead, it gets more confusing, and a couple more things are revealed about the character that does make the love interest motivation in the movie make more sense, but still not enough to make me care about the character. With the movie having an ending that felt like is trying to be deep and impactful and question what happens, but I just did not care and it came off as pretentious. But that being said I do have a weakness for romance, and the fail attempt of the movie trying to make the relationship feel genuine despite how weak it is was amusing. Maybe other people can find deeper meaning in this movie, which I was trying to see in this movie, but the sheer nonsense of the story took me out of the movie as I did laugh quite a bit in this movie. That being said I guess there were times I was genuinely interested in the story and the direction the movie could have taken, but the direction it goes is just borderline laughably bad.
The characters were forgettable and uninteresting. I watch this movie with my sister since she is a huge fan of anime, and we were trying to describe the characters, and we came up empty in that task. That is because the movie never really makes the character interesting or have much personality, likes, dislike, dreams, goal etc. As I said the first thirty minutes or so the movie did not really have a plot, and was focused on the group of friends of Norimichi, with them just spending that time talking about boobs, and fireworks. We barely spend any time with the love interest at that time, and for some reason, she chooses to go on a date with them just because she moving. The fact that she just barely getting to know Norimichi, did not make me care about their relationship in the movie or be invested. They had no real chemistry, it was just teenage angst and hormone, and I could not care for the relationship. I felt like I care more about the friendship of Norimichi and the love rival. I mean not saying their friendship was particularly strong, but they did do something interesting with friends before girls, and I thought they would play more with that dynamic, but the movie never does anything interesting after the plot starts. That being said is infinitely better than the chemistry of Norimichi and the love interest, which was no chemistry. The only thing I was interested in was the motivation of the love interest, Nazuna ( I am tired of spelling love interest so I am googling her name). Which even then it felt a bit weird. Because what Nazuna say, and the parent's expression does not quite match up, so is she possible lying, is there something more to it? Who cares, the movie clearly does not. Even though with time travel they have lots of possibilities to explore the characters and make them interesting, but they never do. Making the audience not connect with the character journey, and making lots of grand moment feel hilarious instead of touching.
The animation felt like a tv budget. Or maybe a rush work, under budget who knows. The animation at times can look great and have lots of distinct and visually pleasing scenes. Also, we cannot forget that shot of Nazuna crotch, which is the key to this movie XD. While the movie mostly use 2d animation, it does use CG quite and bit, and the CG in the movie was just awful. Which if it was for background maybe it would not be so bad, but they had the main character and his friends be in CG when they were riding their bikes, looking like those horrible background CG characters, but be in the forefront a bit. It was laughably bad, and the water effects were equally just as bad. The only good CG in the film was the magical time-traveling ball that Nazuna found at the beach. With them doing some really cool stuff with it that does feel magical and the scene looking great because of the CG, not despite it. That being said for the most part the CG was bad and it is used quite a few time which is a shame because again it can look wonderful when it is 2d animation. I said a good contrast of the quality was the scene at the pool where a dragonfly lands on top of Nazuna, with the dragonfly being CG and feeling out of place. But when it flies away you see the dragonfly multiple eye perspective which was a really great shot that did look great and creative. Is just too bad that the horrible CG (and characters and story) almost negate those moments. That being said the 2d animation is not perfect either, as there were two moments where the mouth flap just looks awful, and almost out of synch, and keep in mind this was subtitle and not dub. While it does have lots of awe moving scene that are creative, unfortunately, the quality of the animation is all over the place from alright, to amazing to plain awful. Also, the soundtrack was great and did elevate those magical moments. Making those scene extremely hilarious because of how magical the animation and music is, but the story and character are terrible. Making for what should be an inspiring moment full of feels, be replaced with me smiling from how the movie so did not earn this moment and just laughing at it. I think is the music and the few great moments that are animated well, makes this movie entertaining, instead of just being a terrible movie.
The movie is not Your Name, the movie is not A Silent Voice, the movie is a terrible romantic movie with time travel. My sister who is an angsty teenager who likes anime and K-pop found this movie to be okay at best, so I do not think other teenagers will like this movie either. I can only recommend this movie if you are seeing it with a friend to laugh at how bizarre this movie is. Not the same bizarre way that Paprika or Utena the movie is, but unintentionally bizarre. While not the worst movie I have seen, and I was not bored and did enjoy this movie for its bizarreness, is clearly not a good movie. I give this a D
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
