I didn't do this earlier. Been busy. I wanted to share this. Anyone can make a difference in the spirit of giving.
This took place in November, a week before Thanksgiving. We had only a month or so to prepare. One of the guys on Facebook said we should do it and we voted on the 3 people who will be in charge. I was one of the 3 people.
At first it looked overwhelming. One of the guy, call him Enrique question why we're doing this. Our group isn't close. Our academy was made of 20 kids who score the highest on state standardized tests to be the guinea pig program that later became a magnet program. (As a background information, my high school was in the ghetto and was not very good high school. Only about 300 kids graduated from my year.) We did it because it's supposed to be tradition.
Saray was in charge of accounting and entertainment, Enrique was in charge of distributing invitations and follow up, and I was in charge of food. We do help each other out. Naturally, I am cheapskate at heart. I didn't want to overspend because this is a pool of our people's money. I had a hard time finding the right catering service and a location. I thought of food trucks. It didn't work out. Later on, I found out from Saray that she and most of the others want the location of the party at the high school. I argued it was cheaper to do it at a restaurant. In the end, it was at the school. We had to broker a deal with the principal to make sure the money we paid to reserve a spot was to be used for the kids. I remembered arguing whether we should having wine or not. We ended up including wine.
Middle of the month, Enrique and I found out someone had passed away a while back. It was a suicide. The family never mentioned it publicly. She was the valedictorian. She was very kind and never hesitated to help everyone in the academy. We had ask the family if they could share a speech to honor their daughter. They said yes.
I went back to ask for help, to the restaurant I had worked for 7 years roughly. The owner agree to help us because I was one of their best waiters. He gave us a discount and said we can pay the bill, a bit each month, installments. For the menu, I proposed a small Thanksgiving after reflecting on our visits and phone calls. Some of us were in tough financial situations. I wanted to make sure they had good food. The boss said to me you always want to make sure the food is good for any event. Lastly, we went over the budget with everyone and made sure everyone had transportation.
The party was a blast. The families enjoyed it. We did it. It was worth the hard work.
Dream: Looks like a remake of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni will be airing in July. The original seiyuu from the 2000s series will reprise their roles for the remake and judging from the animation, looks like it will have more polish to it compared...

Taka: 1 confirmed death in my hometown next to 19 confirmed cases. I heard the police are fining folks for not practicing social distancing on Facebook.

Dream: At least in New York right now, they're not enforcing it. But non-essential employers who aren't abiding by shutting down at this point will be fined and shut down at this point.

CosmicNoirTear: Everything closed on my part. I live by a bunch of shopping centers. All of the are ghost towns. Hopefully means most people where I live are taking this seriously. Also got laid off from my job two weeks ago.

Dream: My county has 6 confirmed cases. Restaurants and bars have been on take-out or delivery only for about a couple weeks now since New York's the hardest hit state. Hasn't been too different for me any who since I've been out of work and tight on money...

Dream: ...to do anything outside of getting essentials and job hunting in recent months. Though with the state pretty much on lockdown, likely gonna have a rough time finding any employer to work with in-person for a while.

Taka: I think the only thing not closed for mass gathering other than essential services would be funerals in my area. The mayor and staff have been pretty busy in clarifying things in press releases. Edit: my mistake. Funerals are closed.
