This is the first of a new series I will be writing. It will involve me delivering occasional but consistent reviews about manga, known enough to get scanlated but not known by the masses. Anyway, here I am with yet another darker series.
Arigatou is a 4 volume series by Naoki Yamamoto focusing on a rather emotionally numb Grade School girl (Akiko) who was Molested by a group of thugs. The same thugs dealt her older sister Takako a worse blow and raped her in her own home. Shortly thereafter, Ichiro, the father of the household returned from his business trip and found his family and home in shambles. After throwing out a few thugs who were residing at his home alongside his family, he immediately began attempting to rebuild his family. But this was seemingly an impossible task.
His youngest daughter Akiko was a troubled girl, numb to her own violation, and resistant to any positive change and in fact felt little spite towards the perpetrators. At one point even acting out against her family by voluntarily spending her time in the company of such vile characters. His eldest daughter Takako was emotionally unstable and was unable to leave the house without becoming sick with nervousness. And their mother and his wife who was so far gone that she was even present during their daughters' violation and did not even flinch.
The majority of the story involves Ichiro stopping at no end in trying to bring his family back together so that they might live normal lives. In this venture he faces many obstacles with his family from thugs, to legal issues to his own family sinking into destructive behavior and more. He also reveals many of his own crazed ways of thinking, but ultimately has his family's best intentions at heart. But despite his role and prominence, the main character of focus is Akiko. Out of the 3 females of the home, Akiko is the least caring, respectful and cooperative towards Ichiro her father and indeed the rest of the family as well. She doesn't respect her mother either and cared little for her own sister's ordeal, not even trying to stop it when she was in a position to try. She is seemingly a lost cause. But is she truly?
The series is a quick read being only 4 volumes in length. The art style is pretty free, not overly detailed or sloppy. It is a mature read, Borderline-H at some points and it does show nudity and in a few instances sexual activity.
My major criticism would be that this series seemed to struggle with it's identity. The premise is serious but the behavior and rationale of many of the characters is nothing shy of comedic levels of stupidity. This took the seriousness and realism out of many moments that should not have been taken lightly even if they were occasionally funny. I'll give this series a 6 out of 10. The bittersweet ending could be seen as lack-luster but oddly fulfilling at the same time. I would recommend reading if Dark Manga is a niche you tend to appreciate. Also a worth noting that the instances of sexual activity are not at all "ecchi-esque" in nature so one may not find them to be particularly fun to read or catering to the reader in the form of fan-service. But anyway, that's my first review in this series. Stay tuned for more to come.
Old Man Dream: ...later titles in the Macross franchise can finally come stateside with all involved parties finally coming to a truce over how to handle things with the Macross trademark and all later anime in the franchise associated with it.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
