Note: This is part of the XIV Days of Darkness reviewing mini-series. This review is for Day I. This review also contains mild spoilers.
Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid is a 12 episode action and ecchi themed series on an unfortunate gal and a mysterious mercenary getting thrown into an island fully inhabited with women that also had a virus that turns them into either a weapon or a weapon master when aroused.
Storyline Except for at least one side trying to find a way out of the man-made island only to obtain a coup d'etat somewhere along the way, there's not that much to mention for here. Over half of the show is filled with events that have strayed from that goal and those events weren't that much. There are obvious comparisons with Soul Eater because of how battles function in this series.
Characters The main characters had a good amount of use (especially Mirei) and only a few have managed to stand out from the other inhabitants which were Lady J, Raine, Akira (until after the coup d'etat) and Momoka. The others were either not as memorable as others or were just eye candy and nothing more. Speaking of which...
Pros and Cons The heavy yuri fanservice is both a pro for those that are just seeing things jiggle (especially for those that view the uncensored versions) and a con for most of everyone else that were expecting (at least) a bit more than that. Also, the surprising things about this besides the stated characters that managed to stand out were the well-done animation and music themes. Most of the battles in the show range from decent to nicely done.
The storyline is pretty much muddled despite some of the main and hidden goals being explored in select episodes and it lead to an ending that felt only a tad bit complete instead of it being fully complete. This is also a title to avoid from if you cannot stomach heavy loli fanservice or non-consensual scenarios with the former being much more prevalent here thanks to Mamori as a main character.
Final Verdict This is a 4/10 on my book here. It has not much else to offer besides the heavy amount of fanservice here. Thankfully, this was not as bothersome as some other ecchi series can be.
This series can be legally seen via Funimation, if you don't mind the censored versions.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
I personally found it okay at 7/10 only bc how over the top the ending was, otherwise a 6/10 at best if you like fan service, otherwise avoid it. The first half is just boring, with little development in the story, reason for the discrimination of arms, the backstory, character development etc. Keep in mind I also watch cross ange before this which had a similar concept, except it was explored more. They give a reason for the discrimination and why they are separated from other and the reason why is only women who get the diseased, and show people reaction to them. You actually feel for the character trap in the prison like island. In valkyrie drive nothing like that happen for the most part. It wasn't until episode 7 that it was at least fun, which I don't mind. I love fun fan service show, and the development in the story was sort of interesting at least relating to Mirei, and they started to take advantage of their animation with the action scene. Also Mirei and Evil Hatsune miku were wonderful character. I like how badass and quiet Mirei is while Evil Hatsune Miku (I forgot her actual name) was just crazy. Also love the song.
In summary the first 6 episode were mediocre, and love the the last episode.
If you want a better version of this anime just see Cross ange, it has fan service, does have a decent amount of yuri, much better focus and development with the similar plot in the beginning. Only down side is the fact that the fan service is not as over the top as valkyrie drive and is not 100% yuri.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
