Welcome everyone to the review of the last Naruto film since we're not counting Boruto's film. I have been meaning to check out this film since it's one of the few canon films for the franchise. I had bought the film last month on DVD. Been meaning to watch it twice (both sub and dub). I only had time to watch it in dub first with the English subtitles on. Just wanted to mention that first.
Why Check Out This Film?
The last chapter of the Naruto manga series had skipped over many details and just show an epilogue of what was done. It was pretty rushed over. You had this film and Sarada's story (Naruto Gaiden) filling in some gaps. I'm not too sure about Boruto's film. That's the only thing I haven't seen.
The Last film covers why Naruto marry Hinata. If you cared about that question, then this film for you. Otherwise, folks who aren't into romance, this film wouldn't be for you.
Plot: After the 4th Ninja war is over, peace has fallen on the world for two years. Kakashi is the current Hokage while Naruto and the others are taking up roles as they enter adulthood. Then, a man named Toneri Ōtsutsuki carries out his purpose of obliterating the Earth by kidnapping Hinabi and Hinata.
It's up to Naruto's gang to thwart Toneri's plans and rescue Hinabi and Hinata.
This is the first Naruto film that focuses mostly on romance. For good or bad, it sets itself apart from past films where most films focus on Naruto defeating the antagonist who threatens the world. Without spoilers, the ending of the film is a bit different aside from showing the new family of Naruto and Hinata's.
Martial Arts and Fighting Sequence: Besides their jutsu, the series has demonstrated nice hand to hand fight choreography. The film captures that.
The film focuses on a small group of characters as Naruto only takes Sakura, Shikamaru, and Sai on his rescue team. The rest of the characters shown are pretty much limited. Sasuke who appears on the DVD cover only appears twice with a minor role.
Character designs: With a time skip of 2 years, it's cool seeing the characters in different attire. I admit Ino had the most revealing attire, and even during cold weather, she still exposes her navel. The male characters didn't change much in their attire.
The film is a bit cheesy and predictable. Naruto and Hinata get into misunderstandings which makes up half of the conflict in this film. Every time Hinata and Naruto try to reconcile, something bad happens.
Sakura as Hinata's Pillar of Support: This bothered me a bit. I never saw Sakura as a close friend to Hinata. I don't remember instances of them being intimate prior to this film in the series. Sakura and Ino were more of legitimate pair of friends.
Hinata's Role: This is a bit strange to say. I felt this film kind of reduce Hinata in a sense compared to how she is portrayed in the main manga/anime series. There are times she does fight back. I feel she's more of damsel in her own film as co-star alongside Naruto.
Going from the Earth to the Moon - I didn't understand how they did that. Naruto's gang enters a "cave" and then somehow ends up on the moon. Have to rewatch the film. I put this since it might be puzzling for anyone.
Depending on your preferences, the English localization is a bit different from the Japanese text. I notice the English subtitles weren't matching the words spoken by the dub. It gave me an interesting look at what the dub change or not. I'm pretty neutral with the dub and sub. I know some folks are rather intimate of either dub or sub. I say the dub is more aggressive and direct than the subs. I don't have examples posted. I have been meaning to take shots from the DVD. Sorry, I don't have that.
Narrow Focus - since the movie is dedicated to Naruto and Hinata, it doesn't answer other questions like how Sai and Ino hook up.
The film is pretty much for folks who are into shipping. That's pretty much it. The film contributes by showing how Hinata and Naruto got together and doesn't answer other questions about other couples or provide easter eggs to extend the rewatch value for this film. In regards to Hinata and Naruto's relationship, you don't see much of their relationship developed since 2 prime events: the chuunin exam and the Pain arc.
Taka I didnt pay that much attention to it but after reading your review I kinda find it odd that Sakura was the one supporting Hinata, they were never close to begin with nor has the show pointed it out, guess they only did that so that Sakura can have a role here.
I remember when this movie first got announced and by how it ended, I just then realized how scary people on the internet can be when it comes to these shipping stuffs.
I didn't know the wrath of people shipping stuff until I witness it disrupted a Wikia where I helped at. I can imagine this film causing some controversy, and it didn't really explain about the other couples since Sarada's story didn't touch upon that either.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
