Yona of the Dawn (暁のヨナ Akatsuki no Yona) Publisher: Hakusensha Magazine: Hana to Yume Mangaka: Mizuho Kusanagi Demographic: Shōjo Genre/Theme: Action, Fantasy, Romance, Adventure Read Online: None,
Plot: Currently, Hiryuu Palace has no one else next in line for the throne other than the fifteen year old princess, Yona, who had been raised with care. Finally, the night of her sixteenth birthday arrives. She expects it to be a wonderful day spent with her peace-loving father, Il, her servant and friend Hak, and her cousin Soo-won, who she had feelings for... However... That night, Yona goes to visit her father to tell him how she really feels, because he opposes to her getting married to Soo-won. However, when she gets to her room, she encounters a shocking truth.
Ch. 44 - 46 is the Earth game which was animated in the anime (Episode 16).
Ch. 47 was adapted in Ep. 24, the last episode of anime's first season. I hope the anime does get a 2nd season. After Ch. 47, it was a brand new story arc in the land of fire where Yona and her gang became Robin Hood, stealing tax and food from the soldiers. The fire nation doesn't do a damn about the impoverished villages since they only cared about their military.
Ch. 49 was a cliffhanger. More emphasis on Shin-Ah's character and his past while Yona tries to learn how to use the sword. Poor Yona got knocked out by bandits after she tried to warn/intimidate the bandits. Another child was killed in this series, I think the 2nd one so far.
It's up to Shin-Ah to save the day! It's bad timing since Yona and Shin-Ah are alone in the village. Shin-Ah got his sword taken by the child who was slain moments by bandits.
Didn't think they would spotlight Tae-Jun who was a 1 dimensional character in the anime. He had a lot of growth. Went from an obsessive guy about Yona and his status in the Fire Tribe to a guy who cares about his people.
In Ch 60, they explored more of Yona's backstory as a child. It shows how Soo-Won has that magnetic personality and influence. It's cool how Yona is doing everything she can do help her people. It's off to the land of Kai to find out what staple of food they grow that has adapted to the cold, mountain climate. It's interesting how this manga went into botany of it. They found, a crop called Iza.
The women of Senri village were all over Yona's group of guys. That one village girl wanted to bear Hak's child.
Wish the anime would animate the Fire Festival Dance. Yona looks beautiful in this scene.
The Fire Tribe and Sen Empire tried to take the throne. However, it was stopped due to Soo-Won and Yona's intervention. Surprised to see a decapitation scene in a shoujo manga series. It's great to see Tae-Jun and his older brother get some growth and new resolve to improve their tribe and its people well-being. For Soo-Won, this is advantageous for him since the Fire Tribe will be on his side.
From Ch. 75 or so, it's the Water Tribe arc where Yona and her gang are trying to stop drug trafficking, Nadai, and run into Lili, a daughter of a general
Read up to chapter 110. Was going to stop at 100, but around Ch 100 or so, Zeno's back story was revealed after a gruesome and terrifying battle that show Zeno's true abilities. It was quite shocking how detailed they show the dismemberment and regeneration for this Shoujo show. I did enjoy they didn't hold back on the violence.
Oh yes, Jae-ha's story was revealed too somewhere before chapter 100. I lost track. There were 2 major arcs: after the drug deal is busted by Yona and Lili in the Water Tribe land. Yona and her gang go, don't remember, somewhere far from the capital. It caused the Dragons to lose their power and succumb to illnesses due to being on land not Kouka.
Hak was being pushed and the Dragons were unable to protect the village.
Ch 110 or so brings us back to the Water Tribe due to the drugs and kidnappings from another country due to Soo-won conquering land for the Earth Tribe. They are using captured Kouka citizens to build forts.
Yona's group infiltrates the two forts by Sei in two different groups after Yona and Lili gets kidnapped. Soo Won somehow figures out Hak's group is at the fort and has him cooperate to bring down the fort that Yona was previously in.
The situation escalates as Lili is almost hanged to death at the other fort when Yona and Lili were captured by troops after just escaping the other fort. I had to reread the panels because I wasn't sure if Hak cut the rope (throwing a spear) or Soo Won cut the rope (arrow) in saving Lili.
This arc was pretty great. Hak get to meet his Wind Tribe family again. Soo Won meets the Dragons who were a secret to the public. That was interesting.
Yona of the Dawn Manga Goes on Indefinite Hiatus After Kumamoto Earthquakes
This year's 11th issue of Hakusensha's Hana to Yume on Monday that Mizuho Kusanagi has put her Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) manga on hiatus due to the Kumamoto earthquakes. The manga will not run as scheduled in the 11th issue but will still adorn the cover.
Kusanagi lives in Kumamoto. Hana to Yume's editorial department confirmed that Kusanagi herself has not been injured.
The editorial department will further explain in the 11th issue that the return to serialization will be dependent on Kusanagi's circumstances being put in order.
Kusanagi explained on Twitter last Friday that the manga would not appear in the 11th issue because, even though there was little enough damage from the first earthquake on April 14, she only became unable to complete the manuscript due to the state of affairs after the second earthquake on April 16. She also said she would do her best to return to work quickly.
The official Twitter account of Hakusensha's Hana to Yume magazine announced on Sunday that Mizuho Kusanagi will resume her Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona) manga in this year's 12th issue of the magazine on May 20.
New arc involves the Xing Kingdom when a young princess, Tao, seeks the help of Yona and her band after hearing stories of Yona's group along with Soo-won defeating Sei and freeing both Kyouka and Xing captives. Unfortunate, Tao was mistaken to think Yona was working with Soo-won. Yona cannot explain her full situation.
Tao has a request to bring her country as a vassal to Kyouka since Soo-won might conquer this country. However, Tao's country is split into two factions. Tao's faction is for peace which proves controversial as it might deal a blow to the country's pride while her older sister (forgot the name) will not submit and wants to go to war instead.
Tao is a legit loli. She looked young, but she's 19, older than Yona.
Cat dude, Algiria?, is like Jae-ha, strong with kicks and punches
Different perspectives - Yona was so troubled seeing a young boy eager to buy weapons so he can kill Soo-won. Of course, we learn Soo-won's father is a monster who beheaded war prisoners which made Tao's older sister into a warrior princess not willing to subject her people to that torture, thinking Soo-won is the same.
Zeno's struggle - ouch! He was holding a pillar in a burning building just to save Tao and the others.
Yona's Hairpin from Soo-won - a reminder of the past she cannot leave behind. I'm not one of those people who say you should ditched everything from the past to move forward especially rekindling romance with your exes. The past shouldn't be completely discarded as we learn from them to move forward. Yona keeping the hairpin isn't an inability of her to move forward. She still maybe believes there is good in Soo-won despite him killing her father the day he gave her the hair pin.
I couldn't stop reading. New arc is pretty promising. Hak's fight with Soo-won's right hand man and almost trying to kill Soo-won was the best battle for the last arc. Gives me chill that you do not mess with the Darkness King.
Taka , Nice . I feel bad for Kouren seeing as she became like this because of what Soo-won's father did. New arc is interesting since it shows the perspective another kingdom has of the current Kouka Kingdom and it also told us in chp 132 that Yona's dad was not a bad king from the action he took after what his general did. I would like to see how Yona's band solves this arc and hopefully without much bloodshed.
Yona's hairpin is gonna keep being a plot point until Hak and Yona become a couple(no, rush since that in itself would be an indicator that we might have at least past the half way mark in this story) and maybe even after that. It's something that Yona and Hak might need to talk about.
That Hak x Yona ship is pretty strong thru this arc. I was supporting Kiija (or was Kija/Gija - I forgot how to spell) Compared to everyone except Soo-won, they are pretty close. Only in shoujo, childhood friends have the advantage.
Good point on Yona's dad. Lily saw him as weak but she never knew the good he had done. Or anyone else except Yona and her group.
Might be stretching myself to compare Yona to Tao's older sister, Kouren, as a foil. Both are princesses with different circumstances.
Funny how Lily had 2 female companions close to her. In this arc, Tao has cat guy and Void (Vold?).
With the Dragons captured, Yona begged Kouren to spare them and to prove she's not tied to Soo-won, she has to negotiation and stop Soo-won from conquering Xing. Tao remains behind to ensure the safety of the Dragons.
Old Man Dream: Well, I went ahead and already spoiled myself over later events in the series. Looks like that gets fairly messy with handling its little plot twist involving Rika, Satoko, and the mentioned story element having some assume there's some sort of...

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
