Note: This review is part of the "Before Redemption" reviewing series. This is for Day III-A and contains very mild spoilers.
Cat Soup is a short and surreal movie about a cat that discovers that his older sister's soul was being taken by a reaper due to her suffering from an illness. He manages to recover only half of her soul and places it back to her, but it leaves the poor thing brain dead. From there on, both siblings embark on a journey to obtain the other half of his sister's soul.
Storyline This is one of, if not, the weirdest storyline that I had ever came across. The story gives off many metaphors and hidden meanings to life for those that are keen enough. It's completely random as it goes along and especially at the very first glance. The end result and the credits doesn't turn out to be too much of a mess, though and is as strange at the opening scene.
Characters No developments here with the exception of our two heroes and literally, God himself in the form of a wizard. This ends up showing the little brother's soft spot for his big sister, even through the times where he's been a jerk to a pig that was at their boat and the many other times where they were in a huge pinch. God also pitches into the cat siblings' quest in huge and twisted ways. The character portrayals here really work for this short. Pros and Cons For those that are looking for some really weird imagery and want to look for any hidden metaphors to stories, this is one of your best options to date. The art style is very fitting and isn't too rough on the eyes at all with the exception of some scenes. The animation is really fluid here and is very smooth.
Those that are not into surreal imagery and completely weird happenings must stay away from this as far as possible. Even if you are a cat lover. This short will definitely not be understood on the first viewing and can only get even stranger at the second or third time with some people. Those that aren't into gore, contorted nudity or self-cannibalism are in for an especially bad ride. The musical score for this short isn't that good at all, especially for the ending sequence.
Final Verdict After all these years since running into this short years ago, this receives a 3/10. I remember this being far too much for me at the first run and it was no fun going back to it. For those that want to see some real possibly drug-induced trippiness, go right ahead, but this is a fair warning that the tale is sweet, but it's not worth having to go through a great amount of nightmare fuel for it unless you're brave enough.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
