Note: This review contains mild spoilers. This won't ruin too much of the series, but for those that are wary, your discretion is advised.
Magical Girl Raising Project is a 12-episode seinen and dark magical girl show about a middle school-aged girl that gets chosen to be a magical girl by the smartphone app that she was playing. However, it escalates into a survival game where the person who ranks in last place dies off and will stop when the number of magical girls is reduced to control the amount of their city's magic.
Storyline It has a necessarily slow introductory stage for the game and the participants, but quickly notes that it is really a dark tale at the very top of episode one and said introductory parts were nicely done. However, as the death game continued, things took a downward spiral and caused things to be less fun. The most crippling thing was that the characters' backstories are mostly death flags and that became a pattern of predictability from the third death onwards. The reveal of how the death game was managed and was a nice touch, but it was handled rather poorly and the same can especially be said for the ending of the show, which feels far less satisfying than the initial thought of it. The big twist of the show was out of left field, but it wasn't too enjoyable either.
Characters The handling of a few characters were done nicely, aside of being a survival game that involves the lot of them being murdered. I also liked was that they ended up being various age groups alongside one of them being a guy as their true guises within their magical girl forms. However, the worst of this department is that not much of everyone's development is covered until they buy the farm, and some of them don't make the characters any better, or any more developed than just a tad.
The best of the cast happens to be La Pucielle, Hardgore Alice, Sister Nana and Winterprison for their overall personalities alongside what drove them into their jobs as magical gals. The higher neutral characters were Nemurin, Tama and Top Speed for their overall personalities, despite some foreshadowing that gives off too much for one of them and the other just being in the wrong crowd while being the least developed of the cast. The main squeeze, Snow White / Koiyuki turns out to be a lower neutral character, for not doing much of anything of a huge note until very later in the game after basically watching from the sidelines of the death game while helping other people until a certain point. I do like that she has a philosophy of being a true magical girl that rivals the motives of murdering people completely.
Belonging to the same lower neutral area is Cranberry for being a fun villain and Swim Swim for becoming a more effective villain aside of her being quite the warped person that she was after a point into the death game. This marks the remaining characters a range from being pretty bad characters like Fav and Calamity Mary for their personalities to the worst of them all (alongside being lifetime members of the "deserves death and far worse club") like Ripple, Ruler and The Angel Twins for their overall characters and personalities. Their backstories did not help a damn thing about them.
Pros and Cons The animation was very nice, with some errors aside and the action scenes were delivered very nicely. Some other points like the very mild fanservice that turned out humorous and the music and sound being decent on the most part. There is also an amount of blood and gore that is rather fitting to the dark tone of the show instead of hampering it.
However, those that aren't into strong, graphic violence or gore may have to steer clear and the same goes for if the viewer is into the (dark) magical girl genre in the first place. The art style looks nice, but it's a little off and somehow doesn't pull off being so cutesy. Some clichéd and emotionally-related events feel more like bait than actual vibes and thus, ends up falling flat despite a few of said events working early into the game.
Final Verdict This summons a 4/10 from my book. For those that are just there for the fighting and killing, go right ahead, but sadly, this series is a very disappointing show that could've been much better than it were, even for it's own genre. You're better off watching something else if you want something much more meaningful or fulfilling.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
I thought the show was kind of quick instead of slow in the beginning. With these killing games type of shows, it's going to be hard to attach yourself to a character before their deaths.
I like the show, but the obligatory backstory inserts as a death flag on the same episode the character dies ruins the suspense. Lack of world building is severe especially the game. It's an adaptation of a light novel where light novels tend to do better in delivering really long expositions. Anime shows have to do show not tell and they can cut down exposition and dialogue due to being an animation but they need to do it well.
I agree with not everyone got equal treatment in character development and appreciate the uniqueness of having different ages and a boy transforming into a magical girl. That was a plus.
Shame, the series had potential. It's hard not to compare to other dark magical girl shows. Your expectations will be up when you go into one.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
