Yuri on Ice is a 12-episode sports anime about an ice skater that was down on his luck and was going to give up his dream, until his figure skating idol appears in his hot spring and declares that he will be his coach. From there on, they begin to train for possibly the most cutthroat ice skating season of their lives. No, this is not about no lesbians on no meth. Thank goodness!
Storyline The start of the story is necessarily detailed and at a fair pace, but it amps up by only a good tad from the middle of the tale onwards. The introductory points were also well done thanks to the characters themselves. The plot ends up being developed even further for each of the skaters within the main story and backgrounds alongside events that are outside of the ice. The very method at hand alongside some of the performances differing with each time used made things much less repetitive with the set of performances within each performing person (and most of the spoken events are shown instead of told) . However, some of the repeat performances might put off some viewers despite the differences in jumps and and movements and at least one performance takes drastic turns for the better or for the worse. The dramatic points for the story or the turned out to be very effective and it affected the end result in a very good way. It turned out to be a satisfying and shockingly nice ending than anything else.
Characters The amount of quality characters turned out to be a good amount for this show. The prime favorites turned out to be Yuri K. for his character's improvement through the show and how his emotions affected each performance and Victor for his personality and his human-like emotions in between key times. Other quality characters are Yuri P. for his character and savagery, even though both are not for everyone, Christophe for his overall character, especially on the ice, and Jean Jaques for being rather fun as a narcissist down to his skating style. The only characters that weren't as fun was Kenjiro for being pretty annoying, Seung-Gi for being a colder Yuri P. despite the one fun part that he was in and the brother-sister duo, Michele and Sala, despite the latter being the much more fun person. The rest happen to be above neutral for being mostly good side characters.
For the general specifics, the national variety is very huge, especially among the skaters and works well. Everyone looks and acts like normal humans in reality can be on the most part, and it also manages to work very well. The body types are realistic among men and women, so you don't have to worry about anything oversized.
Pros and Cons The art style is very nice and fitting and the animation happens to be very nice on the most part with some areas being very brilliant (some repeating animations aside) and others being average. The musical score happens to be amazing from the multiple themes, to the background music like the themes "Yuri on Ice", "History Makers" and "On Love: Agape" to just name a few of them. Although the romantic elements are gradual, they felt like they were done in a great way on the most part, teasing and baiting aside. The comedic parts, whether intended or not, were amazing and rarely ever missed. The use of social media in the show turns out to meld well and is used appropriately instead of it being in your face for far too long.
Those that aren't into homosexual events, teasing or not, may be wary of this show and the same goes with the fanservice, despite it being used tastefully, humor or otherwise. Some may be put off from the repeating performances or in the few events where some major tumbles happen alongside some moments where emotional anxiety resurfaces for some characters.
Sub and Dub Comparison/Evaluation Saying this straight up, you can't go wrong with either version. The voices in the Japanese dub were fitting and most of them were tolerable and the same mostly goes for the English dub with the exception of Kenjirou's squeaky and graity voice. The accents for the English dub sounded very nice and added on to the fun of watching the series and they range from Victor and Yuri P.'s thick accents to Phichit's voice, which lacks an accent, but sounds great. The translations for both versions are very close to each other.
Final Verdict I was wary at first, but after the first episode, I got hooked and greatly enjoyed it on the most part as a surprise from the sports genre, which is a normally hit-or-miss genre. For exceeding my expectations and for just being damn fun, I'm giving this a 10/10 and a gold medal too. If you are looking for a shockingly fun anime series and don't mind the high amount of guys, Yuri On Ice is one of your best bets to date.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
If you want yuri on drugs, then try Flip Flapper, it won't disappoint XD.
Yeah as a person who not into yaoi and not into sport anime, I thought it was alright. It is clearly not my type of genre, but I will admit that aside from some of the comedy from Yuri K. the show is rather hilarious even if you wonder if it's on pourpose or not. That being said, while the side character were not bad per say, they did took focus away from character I wanted to see more, and yeah Yuri K just annoy me at times, and the constant internal monologue. That being said for an anime that I should all account hate I did find it alright, and I can sort of see why other people would like it.
While most sport shows that deal with boys, only Free was close enough to start to tease. Yuri on Ice is the first to actually, almost almost embrace romance, but it still tease it. With sport shows, you have the opposite sex watching it predominantly as the target demographic.
I'm not a skater fan, but I heard someone mentions doing quadruple jumps is actually pretty hard to do in rea life.
Folks who don't like yaoi. This isn't a yaoi dense show. It doesn't do thing uncomfortable compared to Super Lovers and most yaoi shows.
I can recommend it to my straight friends for laughs. The sport show has better animation than Keijo but it's subpar below Kuroko's Basketball and Haikyuu. There were times when I find the animation a bit bizarre.
The faults I find with the show - we get these weird backstories but don't do much with characters in terms of fleshing out. I'm hoping we get a season 2 for that.
Yuri!!! on Ice is not Yaoi. Just because there is a romantic relationship between two guys it does not make the show automatically Yaoi.
There's no "teasing" or "baiting" either. Through out the show we witness the two main characters fall for each other and develop a serious and meaningful relationship.
That is the most beautiful part of the show, but unfortunately for some people, they've managed to overlook that whole part.
I can recommend it to my straight friends for laughs.
I'm inclined to believe that any person with a heart and a mind, regardless of their gender or romantic preferences, would be able to appreciate the wonderful depiction of Victor
and Yuuri's love for each other in this story. Yes, there are a lot of gags and funny bits in the show - it's partly a comedy after all - but there's no need to sell it as comedy only, while
omitting its other great features too!
I personally have to disagree. The comedy is the only reason why I personally kept watching and could not care about their relationship for the life of me. Only thing I cared for is Victor reaction as he does have lot of charisma and charm. Honestly the all love aspect could have been drop and I like it about the same, since the main focus is Yuri getting his confidence. Is good you feel that way, but I personally, along with many people too won't feel that way. Is just feel like a yaoi tease, which is not bad per say as it does bring a few fun gag, but as I said, is easily the most forgotten aspect for me.
Edit: Also I might feel less like that if they would have shown why Victor needed Yuri. Oh he need inspiration, so that why he coaching Yuri, because that have not been done a million freaking time in every media. It never felt like they really needed each other or that they grew together except, he back to ice skating bc Yuri inspired him because this is a common lazy cliche. which god dammit now I am hating on Victor XD. Honestly it would have been great if it was revealed he only became his coach bc of the party XD.
What can I say? Hopefully, when you grow a bit older, you'll get a different perspective on life and broaden your horizons.
I hope the same for you. I can understand where you coming from, but I seen it done better, and just find the underdog story more interesting to be honest along with the comedy. More power to you opinion, and you interpretation.
I hope I didn't offend anyone. Just let me know. You can always reply to me if you quote my words. I don't mind. We are good friends. I read your comment and know where you come from.
We had shows like Flip Flappers and Izetta and this show for this fall 2017 season. It's up to people to label those relationships as teasing or not and then yaoi/yuri or not. I'm open minded and know people have differing opinions.
Example my friend Wraith disagrees with me on Izetta's relationship being yuri. I respect his opinion and know where he comes from.
That's beauty of it.
I did wish the show shows more of Viktor's side because we got to see from Yuri's side and his ambitions along with Russian Yuri.
whiskers: I do agree that this isn't a full-on Yaoi series, despite the relationship that formed up between Victor and Yuri K. At first, I thought this was on the bating route until it became official at one particular episode onwards, which felt better to me.
Taka: Yeah, I would've been fine with fleshing out Victor a bit more in terms of story too.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
