Plot: 10 years ago, after “the Gate” that connected the real world with the monster world opened, some of the ordinary, everyday people received the power to hunt monsters within the Gate. They are known as "Hunters". However, not all Hunters are powerful. My name is Sung Jin-Woo, an E-rank Hunter. I'm someone who has to risk his life in the lowliest of dungeons, the "World's Weakest". Having no skills whatsoever to display, I barely earned the required money by fighting in low-leveled dungeons… at least until I found a hidden dungeon with the hardest difficulty within the D-rank dungeons! In the end, as I was accepting death, I suddenly received a strange power, a quest log that only I could see, a secret to leveling up that only I know about! If I trained in accordance with my quests and hunted monsters, my level would rise. Changing from the weakest Hunter to the strongest S-rank Hunter!
Zero So I just read the whole of solo leveling in 3 days, just caught up.
And I gotta say....HOLY HELL! This manhwa is out of this world! What the hell is up with this MC? He's an absolute badass!!!! There's not a single time he has let me down, he has always exceeded my expectations.
Let me ask u, what was the most craziest holy shit moment/experience u had when reading this series? Mine was when he soloed that dungeon of hundreds(if not thousands) of high orcs, including the boss. I straight up thought it was an impossible task. Those high orcs were stated to be A-rank level, and there were a few thousands of them, what's worse was their leader was crazy intimidating as hell. The dude basically treated the A-rank dungeon leader like trash. He was easily S-rank level, hell it would take a lot more than one s-rank hunter to beat him with the way I saw it. But this dude jin woo freaking wiped out every single one of them like wtf?!!! This is just stupid levels of OVERPOWERED.
I've been hearing of this manhwa a lot, and what I've been hearing about it was about it being a series where the main char is just too OP and clears through the verse with ease. Its one of the reasons I didn't pick this up to read early on cuz I felt like I wouldn't like it, not gon lie that was one of the reasons I dropped HCLW cuz he was stupid strong, almost never gets an L, and always pulling stuff out of his ass Lol, but this series felt different. Sure the storyline/plot may not be the most interesting kind(compared to manhwas like TOG, kubera, etc..) but there are a bunch of stuff that got me hooked. After surviving that nasty quest called "courage of the weak" and becoming a player at the beginning of the story, I was really curious as to who the hell those guys were. Those giants and the God who they had to pray to, those guys were intimidating as hell. I wonder what the hell they are, so far we haven't seen any S-rank boss(correct me if I'm wrong), I'm wondering if that God is an S-rank level boss or maybe even higher? Well whatever that dude is, I'm certain it would be connected to the end game. Jin woo would have to face him again. I'm also looking forward to what this system is all about. About jinwoo being a player, about the system not letting the demons from dungeons leak anymore information about their origins(it always keep resetting their actions), and the 'WAR' that is to come. I'm hyped just by hearing the term war.
I also love the art of this series, it too sick AF! There are many sick panels that gave me goosebumps, but I think the first one that made me almost go crazy with how beautiful it looked was in that same dungeon of high orcs. The panel when jinwoo and all those other A-ranks enter the boss' room filled with orcs, that full spread page was just GLORIOUS! Mehn, I cannot contain my excite about this series, its really nice. I can't wait for season 2.
Btw, have u made a respect thread for sung Jin woo? I thought u did but I can't seem to find it.
El_Directo, So happy to hear you like Solo Leveling. It really is one of the best series right now. If you really like it that much, you have a chance to vote for it in the current New Feature Manga Voting page:
Another issue I just realized with webtoons and not all manhwa is how little content in the first chapter. If I were to read and sample stuff on a weekly basis, I would lose interest easily.
With manga, their first chapters are 20 or more pages, a bit more longer than their regular chapters. It's the pilot. You need to hook them in.
Just need to sample and get the gist of it - 4 or 5 chapters
Chapter 1 begins with a cold open of the protagonist, Sung Jin-woo in near death. We go back Seoul with some set up on the protagonist. He's an E rank hunter who barely gets enough money to pay for sick mother's bills. He has no talent and is forced to be a hunter to make ends meet. There is a girl named Jung-Hee. Looks like a potential love interest.
The setting is unusual. You got an urban setting where hunters meet at a construction site.
Ch. 2 begins with coffee guys talking about the Dungeon being a D rank. Some concern since Sung Jin-woo is an E rank. A foreshadowing to what we saw in a cold open of chapter 1. Yes, Sung Jin-woo is infatuated with Jung-Hee who is healing him. He lied he is a hunter for fun rather tell her about his mother due to embarrassment.
The raid group discovers another lair and votes on whether to proceed or not, acknowledging the potential danger. Sung becomes the tie breaker for votes and financial burdens are on his mind.
Pretty much doom. Reminds me of Sword Art Online with another inexperienced group meeting their demise after finding a strange room and going inside in hopes of treasure. Or Goblin Slayer as well. I don't know how experienced were Solo Leveling's group. They actually acknowledge the dangers.
Some limitations with the art. They reused panels of the statue's eye and the protagonist's looking back in horror. We expanded on the protagonist's backstory a bit of how he struggled a lot. They explained the ranking a bit. The leader has done some B Rank but he doesn't usually do higher than D rank dungeons. This dungeon was supposed a D Rank but he thinks this dungeon might S or A Rank.
Gives more world building. 10 years ago, a gate opened in their world which cause some but not all humans to awakened. These people became hunters to kill monsters beyond the gate. The protagonist remembers the commandments after noting how their raid members get killed by the stone guard who protects the door while the lord statue shoots whomever moves.
I have to end my sampling.
It was a slow read. Definitely for people who likes this type of pacing. Nothing unique. The premise is still good and simple enough for it to build upon itself for a greater overall plot.
