Sogiita Gunha is one of 7 of the Level 5 Espers in Academy City. Though ranked the lowest among them at No. 7, it nonetheless makes him an extroardinarily powerful psychic. Even more interestingly, he's also the most powerful Gemstone: An exceedingly rare type of Psychic born with their powers naturally developed from the beginning without any interference from Academy City. The nature of his powers are beyond comprehension and a mystery even to Gunha himself despite the lengths he'll go to offer some kind of explanation. Regardless of the mechanics behind them, they give Gunha a variety of strange abilities including superhuman strength and speed, enhanced reflexes, an incredibly high tolerance to pain, the ability to generate multi-colored explosions, a degree of regeneration, shockwaves, and limited control over the earth. The hero in action
Haratani Yabumi was surrounded by 5 or 6 older boys and was wondering how he was going to get out of this one.
But then a voice suddenly rang out.
“You lack guts, mister. You aren’t gonna satisfy anyone that way!!”
Looking over, Haratani saw a figure striking a pose at the entrance of the alley. The 5 or 6 boys turned towards the figure and remained silent for a second. Bang!!
Before anyone knew who the figure was, one of the delinquents suddenly pulled out a handgun and fired it. The mysterious figure collapsed to the ground. The delinquent clicked his tongue in disinterest. Haratani’s dissatisfaction with God leaked out from his heart.
(What kind of ridiculous turn of events was that!?)
The mysterious figure stood right back up. The whole thing took only about 3 seconds. Unsurprisingly, the figure standing right back up like a self-righting doll messed up the pacing of the delinquents.
Despite having clearly taken a shot right to the heart, he had the tension of someone who had stayed up all night and approached with heavy steps.
“You truly lack guts if you’re willing to just shoot someone without warning. Or is it restraint? Is it restraint you lack? Well, overall I’d say you’re just a kid that throws a tantrum too easily!! Don’t you think it’s sad that it’s gotten so bad that you’re in a position where the media can just say whatever it wants about you!?”
The delinquent didn’t understand what was going on at all, so he decided to shoot again. He continued to pull the trigger, but the figure only shook a bit instead of falling to the ground. Unsurprisingly, the boy was getting rather angry and he lowered his gaze to the gun in his hand once.
“…Why won’t you die…?”
“Guts! It’s about guts!!”
“There has to be more to it than that!?”
“If you insist I tell you, I’m also the seventh of the seven Academy City Level 5’s known as Number Seven Sogiita Gunha, but that’s just an insignificant detail. The issue here is about the overflowing guts burning within me!!”
The mysterious guts guy naming himself Sogiita spread his arms wide, bent his back like a bow, and announced this to the heavens. Haratani didn’t know how it worked, but an explosion of colorful red, blue, and yellow smoke appeared behind him.
Haratani was completely dumbfounded.
The delinquents gathered together a bit and started whispering amongst themselves.
“If he’s the 7th of the 7, that means he’s the weakest of the Level 5’s, right?”
“That sounds like something Level 0’s like us could handle.”
The very Number Seven they were discussing could not remain silent.
“Non non!! I already told you! That whole Level 5 and Number Seven thing was all a boring digression!! What’s important here is guts!! It’s not too late! So just listen to m-….Ow!? Stop beating me with a bicycle chain lock and stabbing me with an ice pick! Ow ow ow ow! You all lack guts!!”
It looked like a comedic scene, but about 10 episodes worth of material for 2 hour-long suspense dramas was present in the storm of violence.
And after it all, Sogiita Gunha simply wouldn’t die. His assailants began to find this odd, although their attacking hands did not slow in the slightest.
Yelled the irritated Number 7, forming an explosion centered around him. The villains were thrown off of their feet along with a special effects-like BOOOM!!.
“You’ve just been doing whatever you want this whole time!! I won’t allow it anymore! I will now show you what true guts are!!”
There was no real excuse for getting all worked up on his own like that, since his last attack had knocked the delinquents out cold. The fact that he added on additional attacks, made it a little unclear who the villain was. Haratani began calmly thinking that the delinquents were the ones that were going to have to show true guts to get out of this. Then…
“Heh. I suppose that’s all that can be expected from small fries like them.”
A new presence appeared from the darkness. Haratani heard footsteps as an urban monster born from the darkness of Academy City approached. A huge muscular human weapon of a man made his appearance. He looked like the kind of person who had passed through 3 countries with a foreign mercenary group on his way there.
“I am Yokosuka the Organ Crusher. It seems you were showing some love for my boys.”
Lower middle class Haratani Yabumi thought that this man should be off plotting some master plan to overthrow the foundations of the world somewhere away from him instead of mugging people in back alleys, but the voice of Haratani’s heart did not reach that muscular final boss.
“However, you’ve stuck your nose where it doesn’t belong. There is no repentance here. Now that you have stood before an anti-esper battle expert like me, Yokosuka-sama the Organ Crusher, you-…”
“Sorry, I farted!!”
“Wait, aggh! Stay quiet and listen to what people say to the end!! So, um, fuck, where was I? Oh, right. Ahem. Now that you have stood before an anti-esper battle expert like me, Yokosuka-sama the Or-…”
“I said listen to what people-…bgrh!?”
Yokosuka-san the Organic Something-or-Other was trying to say something, but he suddenly rotated at high speed like a bamboo copter. There had been more than 10 meters between Number Seven and Mr. Organic, but some kind of odd shockwave or psychokinesis had gotten a clean hit on him.
“…Wait…cough….What…What was that…?”
“Hh hh hhhnnn. That was the true worth of Academy City’s Number Seven. I create an unstable wall of psychokinesis in front of me and destroy it with a stimulus provided by my own fist. That causes it to send an explosive after-effect a long distance. It’s my special move and I call it Attack Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh !!” He revealed this new fact with an explosion. But Haratani spoke up calmly. “No, that’s impossible.”
“I don’t think just applying a stimulus to a field of psychokinetic power would have that kind of reaction. My chosen field of study in the psychic power development Curriculum is about that kind of thing, so I know a lot about it.”
The attacker and the attacked both held an awkward silence.
Sogiita Gunha lowered his gaze to his clenched fist briefly.
“Then what did I do and how did I do it?”
“Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeyyyyyyyyyyy!! What the hell!? What kind of half-assed way is that to treat your special move!? Think about how the people who were taken out by it feel!!”
“That’s exactly the same as the first ti-…brrhhfd!?”
Yokouska-san the Organic Whatever flew into the air spinning around. Haratani’s shoulders drooped. He had been saved, but he wasn’t happy about it at all. It seemed Mr. Organic would rather die than lose to someone who would look more at home at a festival, but the physical damage he had taken was real. He tried to stand up, but his legs were shaking uncontrollably.
“Kh. I-I would expect no less of Number Seven.”
Mr. Organic didn’t have the strength left to run away, much less fight. He must have known how this was going to end, because he looked up at Sogiita’s face and spoke.
“…Just grant me one thing.” A genuine smile one wouldn’t expect to see on a villain appeared on his face. “At least finish this with some extraordinary attack. Not something as boring-sounding as Amazing Punch. Give me a genuine attack that almost sounds worth losing to.”
Hearing that, Number Seven quietly nodded.
He slowly clenched his fist and…
“I said not tha-....bibrchfsda!?”
Kuroko, a Level 4 Teleporter confronts Gunha (after another of his rematches with Yokosuka.) After getting teleported upside down by Kuroko, he brings himself back to his feet with an almighty shout. Was also hardly fazed by Kuroko's signature dropkick
Standing up with a delighted expression, Yokosuka jumped up and rushed at Sogiita.
Facing him head-on, Sogiita clenched his fist, and with all his strength, he shouted,
"SUPER AMAZING PUNCH!!!"
"IT DIDN'T GET ANY STRONNNNNGERRRRRRRRRR!!!"
Flying out and crashing into the railings on both sides of the road, Yokosuka lost consciousness just like that. Seeing him and the railings that got reduced to scrap metal, Haratani sighed as he wanted to say something—
But before that could happen, a girl who suddenly appeared said to Sogiita,
"Judgment desu no."
The twin-ponytail girl's hair was swaying about as she showed her armband to Sogiita. Though she seemed to be a middle schooler from nearby, she should be a somewhat impressive one given that she was a member of Judgment.
"I came here after hearing commotion of a fight. That person over there fell asleep because of your attack, am I right?"
Facing the girl who had definitely used teleport to get there, Sogiita nodded his head calmly.
"Ohhh, I see! A girl like you can become a member of Judgment. Which means that you have quite the guts! Do your best!"
"On a side note, the answer to your question is 'yes'—but then again, it's more accurate to say that he got knocked out instead of saying that he fell asleep. Even though he fainted, that guy got guts. Got to remember that!"
Seeing Sogiita give her a thumbs-up, the girl from Judgment frowned and pulled out metal needles-like things from her inner thighs, and said something that a Judgment officer should say.
"It seems like you don't understand your situation now. Anyway, based on the situation I've seen from the battle just now, you're suspected of causing damage. Please explain further after you're arrested."
Though she was right, Haratani said,
"Ahh, no, Miss Judgment officer, that was..."
He just fought back in response to an opponent's taunt. Though it was an overkill act of self-defense, they wouldn't know if that guy was a leader of some gang members with arms. This could have been a decent way to defend Sogiita, but before that could happen, the suspect responded with a gutsy tone,
"Fighting? That's not right, missy."
"All I did was get guts into him!"
YOU BASICALLY SAID THAT YOU ABUSED HIM!!!
Haratani wanted to shout out from deep within his throat, but after seeing that stupid guy, he realized that it was already troublesome to even glance at the Judgment officer, and thus shook his head to say that it didn't matter if she arrested him.
"I'm going to arrest you."
It was useless to say anything for him. Thinking like this, Shirai Kuroko reached her hand out at the opponent's stomach—
And used her teleport ability to tilt the opponent upside down.
She would then teleport his body onto the ground and use the metal needles to pin his clothing to the floor like usual. It was just that simple—
But that would normally happen in battles against Skill-Out members.
What was troubling was that this guy was completely different from a Level 0 in all aspects.
With a roar of hot-bloodedness, the surroundings started to be affected by the wave.
The vibration of the atmosphere echoed throughout, and everyone hurriedly covered their ears even though they knew that it was too late.
He didn't even need to use his hands. He just used a shout to prevent himself from falling down.
If it just involved an ability, anyone would feel that it was simply stupid. But no matter the result, the fact was that he stood upright in front of everyone.
"That sudden turnabout really shocked me. Was that teleport?"
"!! An esper, huh? So it doesn't matter if I go all-out, right?"
The words came out later than the action, as Kuroko let out a fearless smile, teleported her own body above the opponent, and let gravity take her as she attacked down at the enemy.
Any ordinary man who saw that completely unexpected attack from above would easily collapse to the floor, but the moment her feet landed on the guy's head, a heavy impact could be felt from there.
It felt like a human-shaped wheel got kicked as Kuroko jumped backwards in a leaping manner. She stared at him with a puzzled look.
It didn't look like a complete block of the attack, as the guy put his hand on his head and turned around.
"Owww... What was that? ...Super speed or time stop? No, wait, you can teleport yourself, right? That's some guts you have there! But I won't accept ambushes. A man has to teleport his opponent right in front of him! Oh, but you're a girl, so that's fine... I guess."
The guy in the white uniform responded to what Mikoto suddenly said with a fearless smile.
"I'm not really interested in battling girls and kids, but I can't refuse such a gutsy challenge. So be it. Missy, you can attack me all you want. If I can take it, I win, and if I can't or if I fight back, I'll admit that I'm not gutsy enough, and it will be my loss."
On hearing the hot-blooded guy who just set the rules on his own, Mikoto frowned and said,
"Ahh... the more I think about it, I'm reminded of this manner of speech. The personality's completely different, so why is that so? Oh, well, let's just treat it as practice before I face that guy. I'll force you to fight back. Get ready."
Flipping the arcade coin she had taken out from who knows where, Mikoto quickly accelerated the electric output in her entire body.
"So since you're using me as a stepping board to challenge on, 'that guy' seems like he's a really gutsy person! Then I won't run, I won't hide! Bring it on!"
Facing the guy in the white uniform who was still rattling on, *BOOM!!* The Railgun was shot out.
"OOOOOOOOOONEEE-SAMA!? HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND!? THIS ESPER IS A SUSPECT, BUT YOU ACTUALLY USED SUCH A MOVE ON A HUMAN OF FLESH AND BLOOD SO SUDDENLY!? No, wait, I seem to hear that it's okay if it's against an opponent in a car, but even then, it's a bit delicate for a Judgment officer."
Remembering that she had once used this attack to finish off a criminal, Kuroko hurriedly lectured her, but...
"No worries, Kuroko. This person feels a lot sturdier than a tank."
Appearing in front of Kuroko's eyes was the white uniform guy standing casually in the midst of the dust that had been blown up due to the impact.
"Nah hah, hissy (Not bad, Missy)..."
She thought that he mumbled because of the high impact,
But Sogiita seemed like he was biting on something as he said that.
Understanding that the object he was biting onto was the arcade game coin that the Electromaster girl shot out with supersonic speed, Haratani and the Tokiwadai Judgment officer were both dumbstruck. The blond Judgment officer's teeth were letting out a creaking sound.
Sogiita spat the arcade game coin onto his hand, and stared at it unhurriedly.
Then, after tilting his head slightly, he said with a serious expression,
"Missy, I have something to say to you."
"Wh-What? You're fighting back now?"
Seeing the Electromaster girl who was breaking cold sweat and forcing a smile, Sogiita said,
"Arcade game coins are not to be brought out."
Everyone there was silent. At that moment, Sogiita seemed like he was worried for the girl who was his opponent, and said,
"I feel that it's better that you return this to the arcade before the shopkeeper gets angry. Well, I can go apologize with you if you want."
After a while, Haratani, who was hiding behind the vending machine, shouted at Sogiita,
"I'VE THOUGHT THIS BEFORE, BUT I CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE! I HAVE TO SAY IT: YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!!"
On hearing the words that were a blow to him, Sogiita widened his eyes, seemingly in shock.
"I see, so I'm an idiot."
After lowering his head dejectedly a bit, he quickly recovered and said loudly with guts,
"But, well, SUCH TRIVIAL STUFF LIKE WHETHER I'M SMART OR DUMB IS UNNECESSARY! I DON'T HAVE TO MIND!!"
Fought Misaka and successfully parried her full arsenal.
She could feel the atmosphere trembling just by standing nearby. All the hairs on her body seemed to be standing up.
And above them, Nayuta, who could see and feel the AIM diffusion field, thought that this looked like the end of the world. All the forces were fluctuating intensively, and it seemed like she was standing in front of a typhoon.
The power difference is actually that great...
And also, this wasn't really an intense battle between Level 5s.
One side was attacking, and one side was defending. It was just a one-sided battle.
But even so, there was already such a large flow of power. If Sogiita Gunha used his real ability to fight back, no matter who won, maybe there would be a need to be ready in case the entire park disappeared.
"AMAZING PUNCH... GUARD!!"
Facing the electric strike Mikoto released from her hand, he used what looked like a fist that was shrouded in a mirage to knock it to the ground. It was really a ridiculous scene.
In contrast, Mikoto used the iron sand to create several hundred drills and run them through with electricity, readying them to pierce Sogiita from all over the place, and shot them out. Manipulating the iron sand at such a speed that there was no time to breathe, she also let the empty cans ionize into plasma to distract the enemy's eyes before running into him, displaying all sorts of attacks.
Sogiita continued to use the mysterious waves to knock the continuous strikes of electricity down to the ground. As he had declared, he hadn't fought back against Mikoto. Besides, it was impossible for him to not be hurt, as it looked like burns were developing on his body.
"You actually knocked electricity down? What did you do? You're the same type as 'that guy', right!?"
"Let me explain! I use telekinesis to gather the Earth's magnetic field into my hand, and use this electromagnetic field to divert the electric flow! I call it Aurora Guard!"
The boy, who was being grabbed by Kuroko behind the vending machine and talking to someone, immediately shouted at Sogiita who said such weird things,
"DIDN'T I TELL YOU THAT IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!? STOP MAKING UP SOME RANDOM STUFF LIKE AN ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD!!"
"WHAT!? THEN HOW DID I KNOCK THAT ELECTRICITY TO THE GROUND!?"
Sogiita looked rather amazed as he stared at his own fists. Mikoto rubbed her temples and said,
"Am I seeing a Boke and Tsukkomi routine? Anyway, I don't feel satisfied with this one-sided attack. Hurry up and retaliate!"
"I won't take back what I said!!"
Seeing Sogiita nod his head forcefully, Mikoto frowned.
"Then I'll forcefully twist that stiff mouth of yours!!"
Saying what sounded like a line from a villain, Mikoto increased the power output from her entire body.
It was unknown how it was powered as the sky was covered with dark clouds. Seemingly in concert with the trails of electricity surrounding Mikoto, the skies were lit with lightning.
"Fufu, I can imagine what you're going to do now. Either way, it'll be really painful if I take one of these. Then, I have to bet all my guts and defend with all I got."
Sogiita let out a fearless smile, and with that momentum, a tornado of mysterious waves was whipped up.
Takes a hell of a beating from Ollerus and just keeps going.
In a container storage area in District 11, around 9 girls were collapsed next to a line of giant metal boxes. The girls’ clothes, hairstyles, heights, physiques, and even faces were all identical. They were the Sisters who had been created from the cells of a certain Level 5.
Rifles had fallen to the ground, empty shells were scattered about, and the girls were collapsed on the ground unconscious. One man was standing amid it all.
He was unscathed.
The man who should have become a Magic God, Ollerus, took in the nighttime scenery and his eyes narrowed slightly.
This man was so powerful that the entire magic side was after him and yet he had managed to crush every pursuer that came for him. He had not faced defeat even in the headquarters of the science side, Academy City.
“Wow, this is pretty amazing,” came a sudden voice.
A boy was standing a bit away from the collapsed girls. He was Number Seven, Sogiita Gunha. He was Academy City’s seventh Level 5 and also a true man of love and guts.
His face showed displeasure for the scene before him.
But that was not because of the existence of 9 girls with the same face.
Sogiita was not bothered by such trivial things.
“…These 9 gorgeous girls…I guess that’s what I’d call them. Well, anyway, you seem pretty pleased with yourself for mercilessly beating up some girls. Amazing. I’ve never seen someone with less guts.”
“I have my reasons.”
Ollerus smiled slightly.
He slowly turned his head and looked at Number Seven.
“If Academy City was just going to gather up the around 50 gemstones in the world, I wouldn’t stop them. However, there is a risk that they will use them for some unknown kind of research here.”
With the irregular method with which the gemstones had been invited to Academy City, they were a rare existence for the Academy City scientists. It was possible some perverted scientist would imprison them in some dark laboratory.
“I thought I should give them a warning. It’s not quite as vague as having a check on them. It’s more of a negotiation using force. If I can just easily defeat the strongest gemstone who is also #7 in Academy City, that should be enough. That should get across to him what I plan to do if anything happens to the gemstones while they are here.”
“Hehh…” Number Seven smiled slightly.
“Excellent. Now that’s a line with some guts in it. So you’re negotiating with the darkest depths of Academy City and basically picking a fight with them for the sake of only 50 kids. And you’re going to physically clash with a Level 5 to do it. Good, good. That’s a spirit with quite a bit of guts in it.”
“But you know,” said Sogiita after remaining silent for a moment. “I don’t know who these girls are. And yet they risked their lives to put up a fight full of guts. They may have even been fighting to protect me, someone they had never even spoken to.”
“I don’t have any real reason to risk my life here, but I’ll show some guts. And as such…I’m going to truly crush you.”
The action Number Seven took immediately thereafter was simple.
He rushed up to Ollerus, grabbed his face, and threw him against the nearby wall of containers.
However, what would happen if that series of actions was done at twice the speed of sound?
A tremendous noise rang out.
The steel containers were easily crushed and Ollerus’s body flew through the mountain of containers and a few dozen meters beyond after he slipped from Sogiita’s grasp. The mountain of containers collapsed like a house of cards and rained down on top of Sogiita and the collapsed girls, but he raised his hands above his head and the containers were blown upwards like a volcano in midair.
Dust enveloped the area.
An ominous metallic clattering continued irregularly for some time.
Then Number Seven narrowed his eyes.
“Tch. Your guts may be rotten, but you certainly are showing some warped guts.”
“No, I really have no guts,” said a voice amid the dust.
A silhouette could be seen where the sound had come from and Ollerus slowly walked forward.
He hadn’t changed even slightly. Not one hair was out of place.
“But I have my reasons. Unlike you, I have a reason to fight.”
Number Seven did not respond.
Sogiita tried to approach Ollerus in order to drive some guts into the gutless man before him. That was when Ollerus showed the true value of his own power.
Simply put, it was an unexplainable phenomenon. Even Sogiita who received the attack could not even slightly understand what had happened to him. Before he realized it, he had been blown away a great distance. Everything from the surface of his body to his very core received damage equally. He was not hit in one spot and then the shock spread from there; it was more like an unnatural damage had permeated his entire body like a cloth being dunked in water.
After receiving that clean hit, strength left his legs and he collapsed to the ground. Even so, the only thing in Sogiita Gunha’s mind was not filled with fear; his mind was full of questions.
He didn’t even let himself feel any danger to his life from Ollerus’s attack.
“The most fearsome attack in this world is an unexplainable power,” spoke the man who should have become a Magic God. “No matter what kind of mysterious power your attack uses, if you swing it down the same as a sword, it can be stopped the same as a sword. If you shoot it the same as a gun, it can be blocked the same as a gun. Any kind of unknown attack that can be understood is pretty much the same.”
Number Seven attempted to stand up from his face-down position.
Ollerus did not move.
He did not make a single action that was explainable or understandable. He merely caused some phenomenon and Sogiita’s body was blown back even further.
“But an unexplainable power cannot be dealt with the same way.” Ollerus spoke slowly and quietly. “The most fearsome thing in this world is to be defeated by an attack using an unexplainable power coming from an incomprehensible place while you have no way of thinking up a counter measure. The attack is vague and you cannot assign conditions to it and you don’t even know if there is a direction you can go to avoid it or if you could even avoid it after getting tens of thousands of kilometers away. You now know how horrible that is firsthand.”
Sogiita did not voice any surprise.
It may have been incomplete, but he had taken two direct hits from Ollerus’s Hliðskjálf. That legendary throne did not actually have any attack functionality, but that was the very reason that Ollerus’s spell had evolved to something unexplainable when he forcibly used it as one. Hliðskjálf’s attack was a vague thing that did not have a defined range or force, so Number Seven had most likely already lost consciousness from being on the receiving end of it.
“There is no major difference between us,” muttered Ollerus as he relaxed. “One of us is aware that we wield an unexplainable power and the other isn’t. That is the only real difference between us. You are the delicate yet complex #7 that not even the Academy City researchers could do anything about. In fact, you’re a special esper that they aren’t even sure should really be classified as a Level 5. If you understood that yourself, you may have been able to defeat me.”
The man who should have become a Magic God’s objective was to fight with the #7 and defeat him with overwhelming power. It was a slight check on Academy City that was gathering large numbers of gemstones. Ollerus decided that he had accomplished his goal and silently turned around.
“I did have a reason that I couldn’t let myself lose. It may have been unfortunate for you, but just accept your defeat. This isn’t a problem that can be dealt with using guts.”
“…Now that’s a comment I can’t just let go.”
A presence stood up. Ollerus slowly turned back around. A boy was standing there with wounds covering his body. He had received the unknown attack of Hliðskjálf twice and should have lost consciousness, and yet he stood up. Ollerus had not seen this coming. However, this was the world Ollerus lived in.
“Don’t treat people like they have no guts before they’ve given up, you bastard.”
Blood was oozing from his forehead. His breathing was erratic. But Number Seven ignored the pain and stared at Ollerus.
“I won’t be defeated so easily. I’ll show you that being arrogant and full of yourself isn’t the only kind of strength! Guts aren’t something you lose just because you’re at a disadvantage!!”
An unknown power wrapped itself around Sogiita Gunha.
“I’ll show you what true guts are!! You don’t need some great reason. A man who isn’t twisted or rotten, even if he’s a complete stranger, can stand up for some injured girls!!”
Number Seven ran forward with the momentum of the power gushing forth.
Unlike Ollerus’s unexplainable power, anyone could understand his simple approach. Ollerus smiled in response. As he smiled, he took no action that was explainable or understandable. The third instance of Hliðskjálf and the seventh Level 5. Those two inexpressible, unexplainable, and incomprehensible monsters clashed. And…
