Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection Review by Jgames
Code Geass was one of my favorite anime as a teenager and help my love for anime. While the D.gray man Manga definitely help me explore anime outside of Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon, Code Geass was what help shape the type of anime I love. When I heard they were making a movie sequel, I was both happy and mad at the news. On one hand, it is a sequel to one of my favorite anime, but on the other hand, the anime ended perfectly. While maybe people have mix feeling on season two of Code Geass, it is almost universally accepted that the ending was fantastic. Even though yes the ending for Code Geass can be heavily criticized from all angle, it’s still an ending that resonated with so many people and is considered to be one of the best endings to an anime. With the ending sparking many debates whether Lelouch was alive or not, with many people loving how open-ended that last line in the anime was. So not only does this movie end that ambiguity, but also in many ways for fans, undoing the ending for the anime that so many people love. This movie has a huge task of winning the fans who do not want this movie to exist, so did it, or was it just a lazy cash grab? Let us jump into it.
The movie is as the movie stated, is about the resurrection of Lelouch as he has to save his sister Nunnally, as other people with the power of Geass try to stop him as they have bigger plans. The movie is technically not a sequel to the anime, but a sequel to the movie recaps that do make changes from the original anime. I did not know this when watching this movie, as I notice a huge change from the anime that did confuse me. It wasn’t until I googled it that I realized what happened and that in reality this movie can be seen as an alternate ending to the anime, and not an actual canon sequel. Which might make some people feel the need to be less hard on the movie, or not care, but I do think this is an important thing to note. The movie overall is one fans will have fun with. It’s a fun movie with lots of things you love from the original anime with lots of calls back, and Best girl winning which will make people with great taste in waifu happy that they won. With the highlight of the movie being Lelouch being the genius tactician we know and love with the strategy being more similar to the first season of the anime rather than the second season where the battle “strategy” mainly consists of better robots. So overall it has lots of things that will make fans happy, but not enough to justify itself considering how great the ending was. It can be seen as a cash grab, but that’s okay. It’s a fun movie for the fans that people can accept as an alternate ending that gives them a chance to hang out with the show they love. So, it is your standard, you love the show, you love the movie. With C.C, Lelouch Suzaku, Kallen having lots of screen time to make fans happy in a solid robot strategy war, with a satisfying end credit.
I will say that one of my biggest complaints would be the generic villains. Granted one of them does have a Geass power that does make the tactic battle more fun, but aside for that, she fairly generic I want to become god type of character. With the brother just being crazy and uninteresting. It’s a fairly standard movie that does not rise above being a movie base on a tv show. It’s a movie that really only has any value for the fans, and does not work solely on its own merit as a movie and is not something a non-fan can just jump into. Which is not a bad, because as a fan, this was a fun movie. Is like seeing an extra-long episode of the series, and there nothing necessarily wrong with that. That being said there are movies that do rise above that like Madoka Rebellion, Dragon Ball Super, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist (Milos Star), No game No life, etc. This movie, however, did not rose to the challenge of being something more.
This movie was a fun movie to watch. It did not ruin the original anime, as again it is an alternate ending, and any excuse to see more Code Geass is always a plus. Is it just a fan service movie; yes, it totally is and there is nothing wrong with that. While not an amazing movie on its own, it's still a fun movie for the fans. I give this a B.
Also the dub is better, fight me. Lelouch voice is god damn sexy AF, sexier than all of Kallen and C.C ass shot (okay maybe not all of them).
Old Man Dream: ...later titles in the Macross franchise can finally come stateside with all involved parties finally coming to a truce over how to handle things with the Macross trademark and all later anime in the franchise associated with it.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
