Welcome everyone to this guide. Paint.Net or Gimp is a free software. For now, we are doing Paint.Net since I'm more accustomed to it. I did use Gimp in the old site. The only people I know who uses Gimp is Sonata. We can ask him if he's game for making a guide.
It might look a bit overwhelming. I have not explored or used all of its tools. I only used some of them to make the things we need in the Anime Vice community and its Wikia group. Instead of labeling everything, we go by making things. That way, you can practice and get used to the tools.
For this section, my example would be the profile portrait which we used to make headshots for our character wiki pages.
How do we make a template for cropping things and sorting things into need compartments for our daily use?
We need to plan on what the purpose of the template. This one here has two compartments to help us focus the whole face of the character. The top box allows us to make sure the ratio shows the face when you shrink the image, you can still see the headshot via icon size. You need to plan out the size.
Our profile portrait is 300:450 in pixel size which is 1:3 ratio. The top box is a square so it's 1:1 ratio, 300 by 300 for the top box. The bottom box would be 150 pixel leftover.
We made a box that is 300 by 300.
Make a new file that has the total dimensions which is 300 by 450.
On that file with the total size, make a new layer by going to the layer box located on the bottom right corner. I painted it red just to make things easier to see.
Now, we need to make a smaller box in another layer.
Put that third box on that upper box.
We are going to use that box to delete sections of layer 2 and background layer by using the magic wand.
We do the same process to the bottom box.
Then, we delete all layers in the layer box except for the background layer.
Example: Video Game Discussion Banner
The banner size is 1920 x 400.
1) You open the program. You find a background image that is bigger or equal to 1920 x 400. Try to find a background image that is bigger, so you can just crop. If you used a smaller image, stretching it will make it blurry.
2) Add another layer.
3) The logo - you have to find a render/transparent/vector version. You can either find it on the official video game company's website or its social media sites. Or you can Google it. If you cannot find one, you have to make a render which can be difficult or not depending on your experience. If possible, place the logo in the center.
4) Add another layer.
5) Characters - more priority to the main characters that represent the franchise if you have their renders. Once you have your selected character renders, resize them so they are visible. If possible and you have two, put them at the opposite ends of the banner. You can arrange the characters to any position you prefer. I put them on the sides so the logo or characters don't overlap or block each other.
6) Save as Jpeg and be sure to hit yes to flatten everything.
Taka: How strange, when I log in, the colors via Fire Fox disappear. If I log out, I can see the color for hyperlink words. Anyways, been noticing God of High School has been the talk for WWE folks.
