Anime Expo revealed to ANN on Monday that this year's convention will screen Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution (Mewtwo no Gyakushū Evolution), the 22nd film in the Pokémon franchise. The film will screen at 3:30 p.m. on July 4.
In addition, Directors Kunihiko Yuyama and Motonori Sakakibara, as well as voice actress Rica Matsumoto (voice of Ash) will attend the event. They will also participate in autograph sessions at the convention. The event will mark their first appearances at an overseas convention.
Shogakukan announced on Friday that the Pokemon: Mewtwo Returns (Pocket Monster: Myuutsu! Ware wa Koko ni Ari) television anime special (pictured at right) will get a manga adaptation that will debut in the August issue of its Bessatsu Coro Coro Comics Special magazine on June 28. Machito Gomi, who is also drawing a manga adaptation of the upcoming Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution film in the main Coro Coro Comics magazine, is drawing the manga.
The one-hour special originally aired in December 2000. In the story, Team Rocket leader Giovanni has found Mewtwo in a remote area of the Johto region. As Giovanni tries to re-capture Mewtwo, Ash and his friends are kidnapped by Domino, a new Team Rocket member, while trying to rescue Pikachu from Jessie and James. The Clone Pokémon are also captured and are then used as bait for Mewtwo. The situation then becomes a battle between the wills of Mewtwo and Giovanni; and Mewtwo also tries to discover if it and the clones have a purpose in life, even though they are products of science.
As a countdown to the release of the Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution film, artists are participating in a tribute illustration project for the next seven weeks. The first illustration was drawn by Spriggan manga artist Ryōji Minagawa on June 7. The drawing focuses on Mewtwo's recently revamped armor as the genetically-altered Pokémon faces off against Onix.
The project's other participating artists include Sgt. Frog creator Mine Yoshizaki, Machito Gomi (Bakejo! Yōkai-onna Gakuen e Yōkoso), Kōsaku Anakubo (original Pocket Monsters (manga), Manavu Kashimoto (Croquette!), Satoshi Yamamoto (Pocket Monster Special XY manga), and singer Shoko Nakagawa.
Not all the artists will draw Mewtwo, the art will feature the original Pokémon trainer trio of Ash, Misty, and Brock, a certain legendary Pokémon, Dragonite, and Pikachu and his copy. Satoshi Yamamoto will draw Mewtwo's battle against Gyarados. Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution (Mewtwo no Gyakushū Evolution), the 22nd film in the Pokémon franchise, is a 3D CG remake of the 1998 film adapted into English as Pokemon: The First Movie.
The main cast of the anime series, along with the Team Rocket cast, return for the film. Masachika Ichimura is also reprising his role as Mewtwo from the original Pokemon: The First Movie. The late voice actor Unshō Ishizuka provided narration for the new film.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
