Note: This review is written from an anime only perspective. I won't make any comparisons to the webtoon.
The anime is legally available on Crunchyroll.
Plot: Reach the top, and everything will be yours. At the top of the tower exists everything in this world, and all of it can be yours. You can become a god. This is the story of the beginning and the end of Rachel, the girl who climbed the tower so she could see the stars, and Bam, the boy who needed nothing but her.
Welcome to the Tower of God anime review! One of the first webtoon anime adaptations and I say that lightly because I can't make assumptions something's first in this fandom and industry. We had Noblesse anime some time ago and it wasn't a full on series. Tower of God helps lay down the foundations for its kind. Does this anime adaptation help webtoons? It was mostly a positive experience. It wasn't boom wow, everyone is watching this anime.
With the anime set up in a location such as a tower, it forces the anime adaptation in terms of plot progress to progress floor by floor. We don't really cover that much. I believe we were on floor 2 by the end of 12 episodes. The pacing is bit of an odd one. We mostly focused on Bam and some of his group mates, Khun and Rak, whom are his first two and main teammates. Khun gets some coverage and tidbits about his background. Just like most characters, Tower of God crams a lot of character story lines bits and pieces throughout its run with characters having their own goals for climbing the Tower and test admins having their own political agendas. It's a test of patience. Anime adaptations aren't perfect so you will have questions on some stuff that was probably missing or cut out due to time constraints. The character that suffers the most without spoilers is Rachel whom is in the synopsis. This is the weird thing. Bam climbs the tower to be with Rachel. She has been distant for reasons which is the only or few tell tales of a big event towards the end of the episode. Folks will like it and some folks won't like it as you need to build up a character for it to have a meaningful impact.
As for jargons, this anime adaptation has a lot. First episode hits the viewers hard with it with some exposition. However, important terms like Irregular and Regular gets watered down in favor for other characters like Princess of Jahad. Bam is an Irregular and he is like most main fictional characters have special properties, following the cliche despite Bam being more meek and kind type of protagonist.
Overall, I did enjoy Tower of God. It wasn't "wow, this anime is awesome!". It's a good anime adaptation with solid animation and mild yet sometimes mediocre soundtrack. (did like the ending theme song) When it comes to competing with anime series of this year, it's going to be hell of a competition. Unfortunately, I can't put Tower of God on my top 10 best anime series of 2020.
