Aliases: Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken (2020) Studio: Toei Animation Adaptation: Manga Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Shounen Episodes: ? Release Date: October 3, 2020 Streaming: Crunchyroll,
Plot: A long time ago, there was a valiant swordsman who came to be known simply as "the hero." There was a demon who has caused people suffering. The hero and his companions arrived to challenge the demon to a battle and by combining their powers, the battle was brought swift conclusion. With no one around to cause trouble, the island became a quiet place where everyone could live together in peace.
Several years later, the demon is revived. Our present-day protagonist, Dai, lives on a remote island in the southern seas and dreams of becoming a great hero. When he hears about the demon's revival, Dai and his friends take it upon themselves to stop him and the evil force that revived him. Along the way, Dai discovers the identity of "the hero," the truth behind the evil force who revived the demon, and Dai's own hidden powers that surface in times of peril.
HULU, Anime Digital Network, and Crunchyroll will stream it. No date or time.
Toei Animation announced on Twitter on Thursday that the new anime of Riku Sanjō and Kōji Inada's Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai (Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken) manga will stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Anime Digital Network. The anime will begin streaming on Hulu and Anime Digital Network on Saturday. Crunchyroll began streaming the English-subtitled version of a 30-second television commercial that originally streamed in September:
Similar to Ep 1 where suddenly the guy is a villain. The old man and bodyguard were trying to kill the princess to take over the kingdom. Dai goes Super Saiyan Blue and dishes out magic for the first time. Seeing a robot feels weird but unless you play Dragon Quest or watch Dragon Ball, this will be familiar. The animation is smooth but at the same time, the 3D or CG feels awkward.
Dai gets a teacher/Cloud to help him. I can't believe Dai said he likes (was it love?) the princess during the night with Poppo. I find it confusing when the teacher said Dai couldn't cut the boulder because he move too much with the sword.
Dai passes Avan's dragon test. Due to bad timing, the former demon lord who was resurrected by a stronger demon lord arrives on the island to kill Avan. Despite the demon lord having a stronger body and regeneration due to being resurrected, Avan puts up a good fight. We learned his dragon transformation actually hit his magic reserves. The timing was bad.
I wonder if Avan will survive or not next episode.
Avan did died, a heroic death (via Maten/ English localization calls it Kamekaze). This episode was a passing of the torch, from Avan to Dai. Dai has the Dragon Crest which makes him a bigger threat in the former Demon Lord's eyes.
By now, I am looking forward to every episode which means I really like this show.
We meet our third party member, Maam, in the forest after getting lost and helping a lost girl who was Maam's friend. HOwever, Popp causes trouble with accidental touching with Maam and his pride of wanting to sleep in a palace instead of Maam's village.
We meet another new character, Crocodine, an honorable warrior. He's a legion commander, and legion commanders have one area that they surpass the demon supreme commander.
This is a very small party. Dragon Quests has big parties.
Crocodine follows the mage's orders to kidnap Dai's grandpa using those things. Dai doesn't have those vacuum tubes. He had to tried to take it back. Poppo reminds me of Ussop, both cowardly. He wouldn't go out to help Dai, leaving Maam to assist Dai. The soldiers and gang could not rile up Crocodine's pride as he thrown it away. Oh yeah, we meet the former adventurers who are scammers and opportunists.
The animation is good. Poppo somehow manages to flick rocks into a star formation for the magic circle, emulating Avan's spell, Glimmer, to protect Gramps from being turned into evil. I'm not sure if Crocodine is dead. He did lose. He walks and falls on purpose over the castle, causing the monsters to see him.
Set up episode for all the Legion Commanders and precursor to Haje-(something), a former student of Avan who went to the dark side. We are in the capital city where the princess is missing. Dai and the gang find themselves against a powerful swordsman.
He's human too which implies he's the only human legion commander. I thought there were two humans. We need confirmation.
1) raised by monsters. Weirdly, the monsters didn't hurt him as a baby under Hadlar's influence. We see what demon lord's influence does to monsters. 2) Avan defeated Hadhar and his father. Hyunckel swears vengeance on Avan.
Avan took the child in and raised him not knowing Hyunckel's true intentions. Hyunckel explains to Avan after receiving the insignia and attacks Avan. Avan deflects it and knocks the child by reflex.
The vizier took Hyunckel and raised him.
Hyunckel's character trait is also revealed. He doesn't hurt women. His sheathe becomes armor to help him use magic attacks. As a warrior like Crocodine, he can't use magic normally.
Speaking of Crocodine, he appears to use himself as a shield and summons his garuda to save Dai and Poppo.
Maam reveals the truth to Hyunckel that his father was killed by Hadhlar not Avan. Avan sparred his father after noting the monster was wearing a star necklace made by a child. The monster asked Avan to raise his child.
Hyunckel (I assume dies) throws Dai's group, saving them from being submerged in magma caused by Flizzard who activated the extinct volcano.
We had great animation though it might divide fans depending on their CG preferences.
We get into the battle with Flazzard to protect the princess. Despite Dai leveling up after his battles with 2 Legion Commanders and his supereffective elemental sword attacks, Flazzard unleashed his trump card which nullifies casting magic while debuffing Dai's group in offense. Maam had to hit Dai to knock him out in order to retreat.
This episode was packed. With episode preview, it seems we go into training again. It's following a shonen formula.
The grand sorcerer initially didn't want to help but does it. He focuses on training Popp because he views magicians as important support persons. Popp doesn't lived up to his expectations, lacking the ability to learn Zoom and other things. Popp only tries when he's desperate.
Meanwhile, Dai who is recovering is also training with a blindfold with Maam.
Their plan is to bomb the two pillars.
I didn't know this but I saw this on Twitter. The older anime had a scene of the old mage groping Maam's breasts and buttocks.
Old Man Dream: For the Pixar films from the poll I did up to yesterday, I'll be watching A Bug's Life first.

Old Man Dream: Something I hate doing when I had initially promised, but having second thoughts on the Pixar movie viewing I promised. Four months going through the retrospective has me itching to want to dabble back into older anime titles again.

Old Man Dream: Yeah, sorry guys. But I'm reneging on this. Been immersed enough in Disney the past four months and want to get back deep into things with anime. Maybe down the line, I'll do a Pixar retrospective if I have enough a case of anime burnout. But back to anime

Old Man Dream: Guess even with Weathering with You, Shinkai's still dabbling into his typical storytelling involving long-distance relationships, at least when it comes to Hina and Hodaka's circumstances. Only about an hour into the film thus far.

Old Man Dream: Hmmmmm.... And can't believe I'm saying this with my indifference for both: Your Name > Weathering With You.

Old Man Dream: Done with the film. Think there's enough with this where I can put a review together. Expect something up sometime later today.

Taka: Planning to watch Weathering with You. I don't remember if I watched all of the older Shinkai films. There is a shift from the sad romance to happier romance if I'm not mistaken.
