A few weeks or a month, I had Amazon Prime for one month. I mostly watched anime. My father was curious and wanted to use my account to watch Rambo and other films. There were only 2 Rambo films under Prime video which is odd. My father is of the silver screen action flick generation (unofficial term). He comes from that generation that grew up with Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris, and a lot of them. I'm not a Rambo fan but I did watch the films with my father. My memory isn't that good. I will not be able to point out homages and references to older films as I have not seen all the films nor watch the films with a hawk eyes of a devoted fan.
Without spoilers, this film is simplistic, revenge story for Rambo who is plagued with PTSD. He enjoys his new life with a new family taking care of Maria Beltran and Gabriela. Things take a turn for the worst when Gabriela does not return home from Mexico upon secretly meeting her biological father despite Maria and Rambo's warnings. She gets kidnapped by Victor and Hugo, two brothers who run a human sex trafficking ring.
Cliche is when the villain lets go of the protagonist only to receive pain, the example is one of the two brothers decide to mark Rambo while letting him go. In front of a beaten up Rambo, they declare they will hurt Gabriela to make Rambo suffer.
I did enjoy the conversations, the montage of Rambo's preparations, Rambo's climatic battle despite it being a bit gruesome for my taste. I'm a person who gets queasy easily. I do notice some of the gruesome scene had some noticeable CGI, and during Rambo's massive detonation of the ranch, there were something off in the visuals. The ending credits pays homage to the past films, and it takes old fans back seeing how the character age over the years.
I definitely recommend to the adults that grew up with the film. New fans will enjoy it too. Just don't expect anything deep. I feel it's a simple revenge story. Though, its values and concept might be clashing with this present time values. I can see the movie being interpreted as a cautionary tale with Rambo's scene of telling Gabriela how he has seen the darkness in men when he warned her not to go Mexico. This movie focuses solely on Rambo so other characters do not get as much screen time or character development especially Rambo's new family.
I did enjoy the film and felt it was worth my time.
Old Man Dream: Have bad news and good news regarding Pop Team Epic. Bad news, I didn't realize Tubi only had the first five episodes of the series on their site, so that's as far as I can go with it on there. Good news, Retro Crush thankfully has the full series up...

Old Man Dream: ...on their site, so I'll be watching the remainder of the series from there. Should be able to wrap it up by later this week, as I expect to be a little slower in my progression of it during the week.

Taka: That is bizarre for Tubi TV to only have 5 episodes.
