Last year, we had a discussion among Master Menos,Taka, graet Artiste,Zero,Rebeloutlaw,HungryWorld,CosmicNoirTear,Khorne,Vapovile, and how much energy and time goes into these projects. 2020 is a hard year to say the least. I haven't started working on the Gdocs. I'm thinking of going with Yusuke's approach of doing a staff picks for Anime and Manga of 2020 instead. I haven't been to other anime communities other than Crunchyroll, FandomPost, and AnimeNewsNetwork for news coverage and reposting news in Anime Vice. This is a general statement based on my narrow experiences outside of Anime Vice. It's rare to see community driven votes for Best Anime and Manga. I think most communities are staff picked. There are pros and cons with both. Both are not wrong. It still describes a community in a different fashion.
They go based on their individual experiences and what they have watched and read.
Doesn't require too much work I believe: write ups and self tally.
It offers a broader representation of the community's preferences.
However, it requires a massive amount of work: outreaching, promotion, setting rules, making the vote sheets, counting votes, and then write ups.
If you see in the archive or the comment sections of our best Anime and Manga of the Year articles in the news section, our voting turn out is declining over the years. It's making difficulty on my part. Some of the staff believes we put a lot of energy and our time. The results are underwhelming to say the least. I know it's a small community. We had a very active and tight knit community. Our battle community has been active with the Best Battle User over the years.
I just wanted to inform the community and hear feedback. We might go staff or community driven Anime or Manga of the year. I don't mind trying something new or going back to our old way, community.
Thank you. And Thank you to our folks who have been supporting the project since 2013.
To increase exposure for the thread and get feedback, I will call Anime Vice members who were active in the last 48 hours. Please if you are interested, any feedback is appreciated. I wanted to open up the discussion.
I'd say go for a staff vote this year. It's been getting increasingly challenging to get community turnout in recent years with the dropoff of folks regularly coming onto the site (we had 45 members voting in the Best of 2015 voting, and we now have barely over 20 members who've voted in the annual "Best of" polls" over the past 3 years) and as I commented on last year's voting, I am not going to do a write-up on thoughts of most voted titles considering how much work it takes to write up everything and doesn't seem worth doing if a community vote doesn't have enough members interested in voting.
Last Edit: Jan 2, 2021 1:24:18 GMT by Old Man Dream: Edited to include voting numbers from prior "Best of" votings.
Someday I’ll be gone To somewhere that we belong And God has never played his role 'Cause I’m the one who saves my soul It’s a perfect world we’re longing for
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, a community wide voting is fun to see whether your favorites won what ranking. Don't worry, it's likely we go with staff picked choices. You are welcome to comment on those articles by our staff about which anime 2020 you like. We always welcome comments.
is it cuz old users vote moar than young users
Honestly, I don't know. In the Whiskey Media era site, we had more diverse community of members from wiki, forum, blog, reviews, personality (those who came for Gia, Tom, and other site personality writers), and battle forum. The new site is mainly battle users. Though, I would assume there will be more manga, web or graphic novel than anime because I notice a trend of battle users preferring the original source over adaptations.
I don't know the reasons for the lack of interest in not just site's Best Anime and Manga but other polls, tournaments, and such have low participation.
From glancing over the record of people who voted, yes, you can say the older users tend to vote more than our newer users especially the ones who are active and have voted in the past compared to users who frequently post comments but never join community voting polls. I'm not sure if you meant by the actual age of the user or how new/old the user.
I agree with going for the Staff Vote this year, considering the low turnouts from last time and the fact that last year was hard on absolutely everyone, myself included thanks to all the schedule troubles. I shouldn't have much trouble from this point forward, so that means more time with you guys.
I'm willing to marathon a number of series still on my radar that were released last year, or haven't finished yet, thankfully, so by the time the decisions stand, I should be able to at least tackle some of them.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
Old Man Dream, Didn't notice you edit your comment to add the numbers. Thanks for looking at the numbers. The number range was 30-40 voters which would put us in a comfortable range. We used to do Top 5 Anime and Manga of the Year. When the voter turn out declined, I did top 10 thinking (didn't have the probability skills) it will help with the ties.

I mostly joined for the vsbattle debates. But I would probably at least vote if I remembered to do so. I don't have a particularly strong opinion on way or another on how the best manga list should be made.
Thanks for your feedback. Yes, most people join the Anime Vice for the vs battle. Most people don't know Anime Vice is not just purely vs battle. We got a separate Wikia site, reviews on the proboard site, and anime/manga/general/video game/TV discussions. It's just that majority of our forum is active in that forum for the new site. The old site was more diverse with our wiki, blog, and review integrated in.
Glad you're active in our community projects. There is no right or wrong way to make a best anime or manga list.
Old Man Dream: Well, I went ahead and already spoiled myself over later events in the series. Looks like that gets fairly messy with handling its little plot twist involving Rika, Satoko, and the mentioned story element having some assume there's some sort of...

Old Man Dream: ...Umineko crossover. May have liked the idea with better handling of the story development. But it's basically made Satoko a rather unlikable character now.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
