Note: This is part of the XIV Days of Darkness reviewing mini-series. This review is for Day IX and contains mild spoilers.
Angel Beats is a 13-episode supernatural action/drama about a recently deceased person running into a school in the afterlife where he gets caught between a battle against a suspicious person that was causing some sort of trouble. As he joins the Afterlife Battlefront, he decides to embark on the quest for his memories and discovers a more purposeful task.
Storyline It starts off rather slow, but it picks up to a steady pace after the second or third episode. After the true goal was revealed within the group, it progressed into a meaningful and touching tale within Yuzuru and everyone around him after the halfway point. Overall, the story turned out to be very solid.
Characters Most of everyone is absolutely fantastic with Yuzuru, Hideki, Kaede/Angel, and TK being my favorites as episodes went on. Yuri and Yui were my least favorites of this show due to their personalities, but even they manage to redeem themselves here after fulfilling their goals like the others did here in the show. Sadly, the more interesting characters that aren't protagonists here end up being overlooked, even for development.
Pros and Cons The animation and art style were fitting towards each other and looked very great. It isn't real heavy on the eyes either. The humor had more hits than misses to me and after watching the entire show, it unexpectedly became so heartfelt that I managed to shed a tear. Lastly, the OST was brilliant here as pretty much every single song felt fitting to the story.
For negatives, religious people who are very sensitive to God-bashing may have a bad time with this show since some characters thought God was extremely cruel to them until one point in the show where there was more to their appearance in the afterlife at hand. The show gets depressing at times, especially when the past lives of some characters are revealed. Despite being very upbeat at times where there are no battles at hand, this is not for people who are going through depression either.
Final Verdict After looking into it, this show deserves a 9/10. To be honest, I really enjoyed the show as time went on despite the flaws. This may be on the overrated side of things from the receptive side of the show, but I don't blame anyone either for such enjoyment.
Current Situation: I wanted another excuse to use Enterprise as an avatar again.
I didn't notice you reviewed another Key show. I swear I have bad memory these days.
Being my first Key show, it was a personal favorite with a bit personal bias. I don't think I use overrated or underrated in reviews since it's pretty subjective. Then again, all reviews have subjectiveness. Madoka Magica got called out for being overrated.
Cons - I don't remember much other than character designs, but I can't say it since Dream was right how anime shows cut corners. I mistake Hinata for some dude. Huh, I never saw religion being an issue for this show. That's pretty new.
Oh I think I remember now thanks to Sotyfan. The anime is 12 episodes and really rushed and condensed. They focused a bit on characters but never go through the main cast. If you were a fan of TK or Shina the ninja gal, you will out of a loss unless you check out the spin-offs or prequels. I wouldn't know what's in them if they do have answers.
Oh, the romance was hit or miss. I felt the romance was out of nowhere and forced in. Albeit, there were hints, but it just didn't come natural. I did feel sad but not for the romantic pair.
Old Man Dream: ...later titles in the Macross franchise can finally come stateside with all involved parties finally coming to a truce over how to handle things with the Macross trademark and all later anime in the franchise associated with it.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
