8 Man, Batman Manga Artist Jiro Kuwata Passes Away
Akita Shoten announced on Tuesday that manga artist Jiro Kuwata passed away on July 2. He was 85.
Kuwata was born in Osaka in 1935, and he debuted as a manga creator in 1948 when he was 13 years old.
Kuwata is perhaps most well known in the West for his Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga manga. The manga adaptation of DC Comics' popular American superhero ran in Shonengahosha's Weekly Shōnen King and Shōnen Gahō magazines from 1966 to 1967. DC Comics released the 53-chapter manga in its original right-to-left format digitally and in print in 2014.
Kuwata worked with story creator Kazumasa Hirai on the five-volume 8 Man manga, which ran from 1963 to 1965. The manga inspired a television anime series in 1963-64 and the 8 Man After OAV in 1993.
Kuwata's other manga include Maboroshi Tantei, Chōken Leap, Gekkō Kamen, Ultra Seven, and Elite, among many others. Maboroshi Tantei inspired a radio drama, a live-action show, and a live-action film.
Kuwata is credited as the original creator of the ongoing 8 Man vs Cyborg 009 manga, which launched on July 18. Author Kyoichi Nanatsuki and artist Masato Hayase are in charge of the manga.
Voice Actor Toshihiko Seki Tests Positive for COVID-19
Agency 81 Produce announced on Tuesday that voice actor Toshihiko Seki (58) has tested positive for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The agency stated his condition is stable, but he was hospitalized on Tuesday.
Seki started having a fever on the night of July 31, and went to the hospital the next day and was tested for the virus. His test came back positive on Monday. 81 Produce stated it is working to help with contract tracing to try to find the source of his infection, but as of now it is unknown how he contracted the virus.
Seki has played roles in hundreds of anime works, including Saiyuki (Genjo Sanzo), Naruto (Iruka Umino), Kill la Kill (Senketsu), RahXephon (Makoto Isshiki), Trigun (Legato), Ranma ½ (Mousse), Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (Duo Maxwell), and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (Rau Le Creuset).
His more recent roles include Muzan Kibutsuji in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Aleister Crowley in A Certain Magical Index III, and Schmerman in Plunderer.

Kimio Alive Manga Creator Kōsei Eguchi Passes Away at 23
The editorial department for Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine announced on Saturday that manga creator Kōsei Eguchi passed away on August 19. Eguchi was 23.
The statement said that Eguchi was hospitalized with an emergency on August 17, and passed away two days later. The statement did not give a cause of death.
Eguchi debuted as a manga creator under the penname PEYO with the Boy Meets Maria manga in 2018. Printemps Shuppan published the manga's one compiled volume in November 2018.
Eguchi then launched the Kimio Alive manga in October 2019 in Monthly Shonen Magazine, and the manga was ongoing. Kodansha published the manga's first compiled volume on April 16 and published the second volume on August 17.
Voice Actor Yūki Ono Announces Birth of His First Child
36-year-old voice actor Yūki Ono announced in a blog post on Friday that he has fathered his first child, a healthy boy. His full blog post is translated below:
I have an announcement for you all.
My son was just born as my first child.
Things have finally settled down around us, so I can now make this announcement.
In the midst of all the troubles in the world right now, my son was born healthy. I want to raise him tenderly with the help of my wife.

In 2017, Ono revealed that he had already been married for seven years. He stated he had not previously reported the news because his wife is not in the industry, and he apologized for the late timing of the announcement.

The official website for actress and model Ruri Shinato's agency G-STAR. PRO announced on Monday that Shinato passed away suddenly at her home due to a chronic illness on August 28. She was 31.
G-STAR. PRO stated that Shinato collapsed in her home due to an apparent seizure. Shinato's family had grown concerned after they were unable to contact her, and they then discovered she had collapsed. The agency noted that Shinato may have had a minor form of epilepsy, according to her agency. Shinato's family plan to hold a private funeral ceremony for her.
Police concluded that Shinato did not die by foul play or suicide. G-STAR. PRO asked the media to refrain from reaching out to Shinato's family with regards to her death and publishing articles with speculation related to her death.
Shinato played Kitagawa in the Hanazawa Naoki live-action series. Additionally, she was known as a gravure idol. Shinato played Trish in the Sengoku Basara vs. Devil May Cry collaborative stage play, and she also had a role in the live-action film adaptation of Nanki Satō and Akira Kiduki's Usotsuki Paradox manga.
Talent management agency Early Wing announced on Thursday that voice actor Yusuke Shirai has tested positive on a PCR test for the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
Shirai is currently self-quarantining at home and is on hiatus from work. He is currently asymptomatic, but is nevertheless following medical advice and focusing on recovery.
Shirai himself said that he was initially diagnosed with apparent symptoms of a cold. However, he decided to play it safe and have himself tested for COVID-19, and the test turned out positive. He hopes to focus on resting now and is eager to get back to work when he is able.
Shirai has voiced roles for such anime as IDOLiSH7 (Yamato Nikaidō), Divine Gate (Percival), Handa-kun (Kei Hanada), Cute High Earth Defense Club LOVE! LOVE! Voice actor Kousei Tomita passed away due to a stroke on Sunday. He was 84.
Tomita was a Tokyo native who began his career as a stage actor with the Gekidan Tōgei theatrical troupe. His more than 50-year career in the anime industry began with a role in the original 1963 Astro Boy series, and he reprised the role of Higeoyaji in various anime from Osamu Tezuka.
He also voiced the title character in the original 1973 Doraemon television anime series. Tomita's other anime roles included Bakabon's papa in Heisei Tensai Bakabon, Dr. Hell and Nuke in Mazinger Z, Inspector Ohtsuka in Shin Tetsujin 28, Dr. Saotome in Getter Robo, Alexander Bucock in The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Bouleuse Gotho in Armored Trooper Votoms, and Emperor Daibazaal and the narrator in Voltron.
Additionally, Tomita provided Japanese dub voices for Western films and television series such as Rocky, Airwolf, Emperor of the North Pole, and the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. film. He had a role in the Appare Sanma Daisensei variety program, and also worked as a narrator. Tomita's voice recordings featured in Tokyo Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain ride.
