Hello everyone, I'm Taka, your neighborhood friendly mod, here to discuss and review Dragon Ball Super which is a very popular show as we have it as our most active anime discussion thread. Did wish to see new blood in reviewing the series and its arcs.
This review will be short.
Plot: Future Trunks has arrived, battered and bruised, back to the present with a request for Goku, Vegeta, and the group to help him defeat an evil doer who has the face of Goku. Later on, they discover the true identity of the antagonist as they work on saving Future Trunks's world.
Unfortunately, I won't have pros as I didn't really see this arc as enjoyable and I was very cautious since the past arcs weren't as fulfiling and the hype of this arc can lead to bigger disappointments.
One of the many firsts was an evil Kai, and the mystery and build up to reveal his presence was good. After that, his character fall apart as he had contradictions in his ideology with the way he hated humans/or mortals and stooping low to body swap with Goku just to defeat Goku.
For Future Trunks fans, he's there with a love interest.
The arc had repetitive and dragged out battles. Goku and Vegeta jumps into Future Trunk's world twice and ran away. Zamasu and Goku Black let them go? While they don't stretch one fight in one sitting, having it in multiple sittings made things not good as well.
The overuse of an evil Goku - while Zamasu was unique, did they have to bring and create another evil Goku even if it's Zamasu body swapped.
The comedy and story telling was flat. Goku's forgetfullness - I feel this wasn't funny. It felt silly and poor excuse in writing. Speaking of writing, the story telling had a lot of retcons such as the Potara Earrings in which only Kais stay fused permanently as opposed to Dragon Ball Z, it was permanent for anyone and how Vegito defuse, Super didn't care about it.
The massive overhype over a villain and his "accomplishments" - I kind of knew it would lead to disaster. While it had potential, he couldn't stand up to the likes of Cell and Frieza who had better character development.
Deus Ex Omni-Zeno - While it was great for Future Trunks to defeat the bad guy as Goku is usually the one who does it, Zeno was called in just to erase Zamasu. It felt cheap in the end.
I'm ignoring the power scaling crap as I'm not a battle user. I don't deal with that stuff. That's also a con but only for battle users who were upset with Future Trunks' power levels. In this franchise, power levels are bs in the end which was established by Nappa and Vegeta's arcs in the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. There is no consistency in this franchise.
While Dragon Ball Super had issues all over the place and its arcs are rushed out while dragged out, it hasn't done a good job in delivering a solid story so far. With the introduction of Beerus, the whole mythos and lore open up in this franchise. There is a lot of potential. So far, it has been squandered.
Yeah this arc is really divided with either people hating or liking it, which is sadly an improvement on the other arc XD. I personally like it as Black was entertaining and his presence was great. I mean there lot of thing I can praise him from the performence to just how menacing he actually felt with just great moment that make you want to hate him. Not to mention the dire threat was finally back, there was actual tension and it was nice to see Goku and Vegeta actually losing. So overall I personally enjoy it, but yeah the joke fell flat, the ending felt rushed, and I wish they would EXPLAIN. Also again they make me hate Goku. That being said Vegeta and Trunks character were great in this arc. Not to mention they just have way too many awesome moment that just outweigh the negative which are small in comparison and could have been improve if they took their time and improve their writing a bit.
I like the arc because Future Trunks was my favorite character. I forgot to talk about Vegeta and Trunks' character. Good point on them. Though, I could live without Future Mai since her as a love interest felt weird and oh young Trunks's role was strange.
I liked the arc mainly because of Black, soon as he fused with Zamasu the arc turned boring for me, more so with how Zamasu was defeated by Trunks. Another pro for me is the unexpected ending, seriously, none of the people in kanzenshuu and even here thought about the arc ending the way it did.... everyone died... like literally.... even the lil girl and boy that kept cheering for Trunks.... and what did they do? they left it as it is and Future Trunks with Mai left and went to another timeline, a nice touch was F.Trunks remembering F.Gohan in our present Gohan, crying while admitting that he couldnt save their world.
You're the first I seen who like the Omni Zeno guy's part in ending the arc. I feel Beerus and Whis stepping in and fixing things which what our heroes couldn't do felt kind of unaccomplished in the end. The fact that Goku has to call Zeno - it's different from the past arcs where Goku or his gang will win. It didn't feel as a victory from Future Trunks' point now that you brought up Gohan.
With the time travel and writing and two Mais and two Future Trunks in one timeline, that is just too weird.
Taka, Yes, its not a victory at all, they lost, a whole timeline got wrecked. Which is kinda new since in every arc of DB they always seem to win in the end. Yeah it will be awkward if they meet each other, Im kinda weirded out by how Whis and Beerus wanted to fix things for him, because in a way, their way of helping him doesnt help him at all, Future Trunks and Mai could have just lived with them instead, why go to another timeline?
I thought the ending was okay, if it was less rushed it would have been better so what happen can sink in, instead of it being confusing. That being said if they do a Trunk spin off then that be great. DO IT TOEI, instead of stupid what if.
With the new arc, Universe Survival, exceeding in hype over the last arc, will Dragon Ball Super get over its curse. I see people falling in the same bandwagon trap. Tournament style story arcs have their own challenges and limits. Then again, Dragon Ball has been doing tournaments since the old days of Budokai. The Universe 6 arc was atrociously paced and didn't spotlight a good amount of characters with unique, memorable match ups.
Old Man Dream: ...later titles in the Macross franchise can finally come stateside with all involved parties finally coming to a truce over how to handle things with the Macross trademark and all later anime in the franchise associated with it.

Taka: I see. A global release will benefit it. Gundam did pretty good. The only few franchises that are only popular in Japan but not popular in the west - Yokai Watch comes to mind.

Master Menos: F for Respects. DMX did all his work while suffering from a drug addiction, and I almost never knew until a point. I hope his next life treats him far better.
