Much like fertilizers had done decades before in creating dead zones, the medicines of the Heart wreaked their own havoc on Lake Eerie as they made their way into it. Slowly, much of the lake became a toxic slurry. Effects on the wildlife were almost exclusively lethal, with rumors of monstrous mutations being the only survivors. While these are unsubstantiated, with the lake too damaged to support anything larger than a meter, the effects are true for humans.
A full two thirds of the lake's shore, the northeast, northwest, and part of the east and southest shores, were abandoned by everybody who could leave, leaving those too poor to flee behind. The effects were made manifest within a generation. The so-called M Gene mutations that were becoming common the world over were only exacerbated by the waters of the lake, with mutations tending towards the extreme. Crime rose sharply as a surplus population of poor mutants used their skills to feed themselves, and eventually, there was a stretch of one city so dangerous the police refused to set foot in it. This was the Gutter.
The Gutter resembles a war zone, with hollowed out buildings, flooded streets, destroyed signs, and the dread sign of the Former Humanity lining the walls of their territory, sometimes coupled with cannibalized human remains. The Former Humanity are the rulers of the Gutter, as the marks that line the walls attest. Their symbol, a silhouette with a number of deformities, is by their laws required to be paired with a human body, stripped to show a lack of visible mutations, often partially devoured. The Former Humanity are pro-mutation fanatics of the most extreme sort.
The water is a source of life, and they are its latest, greatest form. Not only are mutants favored, so are those with greatly deforming mutations, the more derived from the human form, the better. Physically normal mutants are regarded as little better than basal humans, only those with "true" mutations regarded as worthy. The highest ranks are rumored to no longer look human at all, although few would know. In flooded buildings, they baptize newly born members and pregnant women, all in the hopes of increased M-Gene deviations.
"From the water came life. But the longer it strayed, the weaker it became. And so, we must look to the waves again, and from them emerges purity, emerges power."

Dream: Concluding things at episode 2 with Vampire Bund for the night. Hoping to get back to Basquatch tomorrow, as long as I'm not swamped with anything.

Dream: Hmmmm... looks like the version of Vampire Bund I'm seeing on Funi's YouTube channel's an edited version. A couple minutes of episode 2 were clearly removed with Mina in nothing but underwear battling human assassins. Then again, recall there was a good...

Dream: Not sure if I should be donning the nostalgia goggles or not giving a damn. Looks like the original Digimon Adventure series is getting a reboot airing starting in the Spring season.

Taka: I'll watch it if there's nothing catching my eye in Spring. winter 2020 was a weak anime season for me.

Dream: Wouldn't say it's all bad for me. Have a few titles holding my interest. Just it typically doesn't have as many major titles of note that would hold me over.

Dream: Done with Vampire Bund. Will be working on a review of it before I hop into the next Funi series. Hoping to get it up either tonight or tomorrow, depending on how lengthy my thoughts get.
